Any Other Films Like This?

Are there any other films like this around that are quirky and have a nice ending?

I've seen "Frank" and like that one too (I've posted similar on that board as well).

It's strange but I also like quirky songs that sound different as well like Lorde "Royals" and Gotye "Somebody that I used to know". I guess I'm not alone though as they both went to number one.

You might like 'Drinking Buddies' for the relationship side of things (and it has Jake Johnson in it), or 'Jeff, Who Lives at Home' (it's quirky and was co-written/co-directed by Mark Duplass who stars as Kenneth in 'Safety Not Guaranteed').

Also have a look at 'Timecrimes' or 'Primer'. Both are different than this but have unusual takes on time travel.

Intouchables is a really fun movie about the relationship between two polar opposite people, I'll bet you'd like that one. On the side of quirky/funny movies, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a recent new favorite of mine - definitely worth a recommendation.

I'll second Timecrimes and Primer, the latter being one of my favorite sci-fi movies and probably also fits your requirements better. I actually thought this movie would be more like those beforehand, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit nonetheless. Maybe you'll like The Man From Earth too, which also slowly hops around a certain idea that may or may not be possible/true, but granted, is not at all quirky nor humorous.

If you're looking for off-beat romance-y movies, I think Her and Crazy, Stupid, Love are great choices.

Thanks koomy and Tuum90. I've seen Her and really liked that one and Crazy, Stupid, Love wasn't bad either. I'll have to check out some of those other ones.

Except the ending, this film really reminds me "Eagle vs Shark" (2007). A New Zealander movie with some weirdos falling in love too. Both films are really great :p

reply

Can confirm Eagle Vs Shark.

It's very different in that it's a very non-US style movie, but the writing/director team (Taika Waititi & Jemaine Clement) never fail to make fantastic, subtle comedies.

any other film about retards? yeah, There's Something About Mary has quite a few. The Ringer has several.

I definitely recommend TimeCrimes, dark and twisted but quite good (also, it's actually in Spanish, Los Cronocrimines, but the DVD is subbed and dubbed in English). Also Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel is wonderfully quirky and makes fun of time travel tropes while telling a fun story.

I do not recommend Primer despite all the hype. I am not the only one who fell asleep in the first half hour the first several times I tried to watch it, and it's one of those movies that people think is clever because they can't figure it out.

I am surprised that 11 Minutes Ago has not been mentioned. It really is a great quirky story with a nice ending and a clever time travel element. It begins as the world's first time traveler arrives in the bathroom of an apartment where there's a wedding reception happening and is met by a film crew that has already met him on his future/earlier trips, and he attends the entire reception in eleven-minute segments out of sequence because of the girl he meets in those few minutes.

You might like Happy Accidents, also on my short list of some of the best time travel films you might have missed http://www.mjyoung.net/time/best01.html
