MMMffmmmhhhhhhhlllllbrble

I'm Viet Nam era. I thought that this film might not be for everyone, but I might get it. But to get it, you have to be able to understand the dialog. This guy has marbles in his mouth, and then he whispers. Even in the tight shots.

The Russian hooker speaks more clearly, and English is probably her third or fourth language.

After a half hour of guessing what was going on, I gave up.

reply

I had no problems understanding him, even though he does speak quietly. Personally I found the way he speaks to be a powerful way to help describe his character. Broken, depressed, traumatized, and haunted yet still attempting to understand the world and find something - anything - to cling to. A desperate and alone man.

Russ Russo didn't just nail it, he hit it right out of the park. It's too bad you didn't give it more of a chance. His performance was amazing.

reply

You're either Russ Russo or a relative because you could tell his on-screen persona didn't come natural to him. He was forcing himself to look at the floor and speak quietly and it was obvious. He's no Robert De Niro, that's for sure.

Actually , according to Many Top Movie Critics, Russ is being called the Next DeNiro, so , since you don't know him personally or how he is in "Real Life", you have No Idea How is acting vs. his personality is http://www.themoviewaffler.com/2015/04/first-look-review-act-of-war.html#.VTR6hJNLCSo

You're calling The Movie Waffler and The Hollywood Outsider "Top Movie Critics?" You oughta be ashamed of yourself! I'm not buyin' what you're sellin'.

By the way, I could tell he was acting and it wasn't natural, I'm good like that. Sorry to deflate you and your kin(Russ) πŸ˜‰

Nah, just calling you out on your agenda, 10 other Movie Critics said the Same thing partner, all wise , all knowing guy who comments negatively on IMDB all day, let me know your extent of great movie acting, oh Jedi, I'd love to hear it. You ain't deflating Russ or his Kin, but I will say this, you deleted a comment you made about Brandon Slagle? Didn't want anyone to find out that you have an "agenda" for commenting negatively about someone's performance even after 12 Critics said differently, since you're so wise. If you were really "Infinite Rage" you'd be angry enough to tell people who you really are instead of hiding behind a keyboard like the Troll that you are.

"10 other Movie Critics said the Same thing"

Ohhh and I'm sure those 10 are as esteemed as The Movie Waffler and The Hollywood Outsider ξ€Ž

"Nah, just calling you out on your agenda"

And what is my agenda smart guy?

"you deleted a comment you made about Brandon Slagle? Didn't want anyone to find out that you have an "agenda" for commenting negatively about someone's performance even after 12 Critics said differently, since you're so wise."

I form my own opinion by the way, definitely a novel concept for you. So you think my agenda is to fearlessly fly in the face of amateur critics? If I deleted a comment, I don't remember it or why, but Brandon Slagle's another talentless hack! Does it seem like I'm afraid to tell the truth now? Russ Russo's a poor man's version of Robert De Niro's crippled 3rd cousin. Yep, I'm feeling the anxiety over saying that one, for sure 

Let me know if and when you begin to comprehend that I don't care about all the opinion of all the backyard critics in the world. You use them to support your families careers but that doesn't matter one bit to me. I saw nothing above mediocrity in Russ Russo's performance in An Act Of War and Brian Slagle's got a face that only a mother could love.

I made it as far as the scene where he explains to the hooker the event that turned him into the broken soul that he is. I have to assume a key scene.

I watched this listening through headphones and couldn't make out what he was saying. He stared at the floor, I couldn't try to lip read to help me. I felt that if the director wouldn't make this pivotal(?) scene a little easier to hear, then I was done struggling.

I am glad that you enjoyed it, though.

I drank a pint and half of liquor watching this movie and you couldn't understand the dialogue? I got everything going on.

Many people lived through Vietnam era today so what was your point? This ain't 1914-1918 (ww1) and also not 1939-1945 (ww2) folks you're talking too really.

reply

Russo's speech was distinct and well-enunciated. He didn't "talk with marbles in his mouth." However, he did speak in a very soft, often hesitant manner, which suited the character. I'm sure it would've been hard to understand without closed captions; that's true for many movies, good and bad, which is why I always use CC. Maybe if you tried watching An Act of War that way, you'd enjoy it. It's quite good, although harrowing at times and not without flaws.

reply

I can only offer you one word of advice: SUBTITLES.

Have you ever watched a foreign film?

reply

He DOES mumble, as do several of the other actors.

This problem is compounded by the absolutely horrible sound editing. I'm actually in the business of audio post, and this was bad. Waaay too much low frequency energy in the dialogue, and no bump in the upper mids for clarity. Additionally, there was not nearly enough compression, or other type of volume leveling. the dynamic range was far too wide, so the soft lines were virtually impossible to understand.

Just terrible. Instead of letting the movie flow over you, one has to constantly struggle to understand the dialogue. Considering how slow this movie cooks along, that is a major nail in its coffin.
