How is this movie anti British propaganda?

reply

This film is based on the BP oil spill in the Gulf. BP = British Petroleum, which it what he OP is referring to, justified or not.

reply

Because Americans like to blame BP for even thought it was a Transocean Oil rig (not BP) and it was the well (cemented by Halliburton, also not BP but an american company) failed and caused the explosion. Plus Halliburton destroyed evidence after they investigated the explosion. Not the behaviour of an innocent company.

Whenever it was mentioned in the news BP was always referred to British Petroleum (especially by Obama) even though it hasn't been called that for a long time. Because they didn't want to blame any Americans, Britain became the scapegoat.

I haven't read much about the film yet but it could very easily be anti British propaganda because Hollywood will most likely not stick the the truth as usual and depending on how much they go into the cause of the explosion, probably not blaming Halliburton, or how much they go into the news events after blaming British petroleum

reply

BP was found by a court of law to be the most at blame for the accident. The rig was run by BP. I don't understand why you Brits are so defensive about it. BP, Haliburton, and Transocean are all responsible for this tragedy.

If the studios thought those movies would sell, then yes.

reply

We are annoyed about it because you are constantly calling BP british petroleum, it is not called that anymore and hasnt been called that for a long time, because it is now an american owned company, with the american news constantly callign it british petroleum they were trying to shift the blame. thus anti british propaganda

reply

BP P.L.C., also referred to by its former name, British Petroleum, is a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, England.

"former name"

reply

'In law' because the true perpetrator Halliburton destroyed vital evidence while BP 'stupidly' did the honorable thing and submitted all their evidence.

To be perferctly frank, I was appalled at the way Barry centered in on and essentially stuck a black hat on that British company, it was an outrageous betrayal of our closest allies who did the right thing while the US companies corrupted the case falling over themselves to show contempt to both the American people and it's courts.

reply

A contractor can't even go to the bathroom without permission from BP if they are working for them. Plus all plans approved by them. It was the BP people partying in finally getting the well in after over 2 months behind and not paying attention to the well that caused it.

reply

Besides, the original problem happened because the BP engineers made the decision to drill using sea water as lubrication and weight instead of drilling mud. Even when pressures began to inch up they decided to "gut it out" instead of following proper procedure and replacing the sea water with heavy drilling mud.

And yes, the BOP failed - but ultimately BP as the operator is responsible for all the rotten and cheap equipment used on the rig and in the hole.

So there was a reason they were found liable. And the fact that the Chairman and CEO of BP started acting like a spoiled rich brat ("I want my life back.") didn't help. IMHO, that is the reason the BP board replaced him with an American in the middle of all this - to try to stave off some of the anti-British sentiment that idiot helped fan.

reply

Yes, American BP engineers. All the BP staff were American except for very high echelon management who had nothing to do with the day to day running of the well.

This should teach BP and other foreign companies a very hard lesson about running a business in the US: Never hand off responsibility to the local staff.

Side note; The head of BP resigned after he was outed as gay. That's how effed up and twisted the British are.

Hell, in the States one of top execs at Apple was gay and he became chief executive of the company.

Most former British colonies make life hell for their gay citizens. That is a British legacy. e.g. the Muslim countries that the Brits never touched allow their gay citizens to live I peace. The rest have a bad habit of jailing them, stoning them, hanging them, etc.

reply

If you're talking about Tony Hayward, BP's CEO at the time of the spill, then your "side note" simply isn't true.

Hayward was ousted by the board for mishandling this situation about as badly as possible. Being gay or not gay or British or whatever had nothing to do with it. Being an insensitive pompous ass did.

If it's a different CEO feel free to provide more detail to back up your claim.

Really? The nation that lets religitards decide who can and cannot get married and who kicks you out of the military if they find out you are gay is going to lecture a western European nation about equality? Get back to us when your nation starts treating African Americans as humans.

Your post has gotta be the funniest thing I've read in years, next you'll be accusing us Brits of having too much gun crime!

Well, if anyone in Britain feels all that bothered by it, they could always make a film about Piper Alpha. That was a much nastier accident, after all. And Occidental, the owners, are an American company.

reply

Piper Alpha was a horrible tragedy, the closest there is to a movie about it is Fire In The Night, which isn't a movie it's more a documentary.

For what it's worth the support rig for Piper Alpha was Tharos, it was later renamed to Transocean Marianas I think, it was drilling the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico when it was damaged by hurricane Ida, it was replaced by Deepwater Horizon and we all know what happened next.

reply

Hey, BP was in charge. That's the way it works. The company man is THE man from the ground to the crown.
