I was shocked that this was given a PG-13 rating. There was a lot of violence and blood that I didn't expect from this rating. You see a close up of someone pulling glass out of their foot with blood pouring out, but it's still PG-13. Of course, the rating doesn't affect my movie going experience. I was more surprised that this got away with so much bloody violence than usual. I saw this at an advance screening, so maybe it was just an unrated cut?
There's a difference between violence and injury detail. Violence is when the characters involved are harming each other for reasons decided by the narrative. Injury detail is focusing on the outcome of an event in the narrative that has affected a character in such a way that causes bodily harm. Deepwater Horizon has lots of injury detail, but it's brief and doesn't get too much focus except for in key sequences. It doesn't have any violence though.
Well said. Anyone reading, know this : the op might have seen a different version or does not understand the concept of violence vs injury from a disaster.
This is actually how PG-13 should be AND some. Jaws should be the defining example of what PG-13 films should be (Jaws came out before the PG-13 rating was introduced so yes I'm aware it is only PG).

And Jaws was graphic as hell, same with the second film.

I took my 10 yr old sis to watch this and she struggled through the really bloody bits. Not just the glass out the foot, but also the dude with the broken leg. She enjoys films like this as well as action films, however the was a touch too much blood for her. The Maze Runner Scorch trials is another bizarre one, how that film got away with PG-13 rating is odd as well.
Then here in the UK Suicide Squad gets a 15 rating, which in America is a R rating (same as Deadpool). I couldn't take my 13 year old cousin to watch it, Utterly bizarre.
That said, I have no problem with the blood or violence myself. Deepwater Horizon was fantastic and when you can get a 10 year old to enjoy a film based on a true story, that's a bonus in my opinion.
