The serious parts made this funny movie soooo predictable(spoilers)

There was a time when movies could just be zany and hilarious. Now they pull their punches by having a serious point, in this case the father/son relationship problems and the grandfather/grandson rifts about the how he is wasting his life. Not all problems have to be resolved. Not all movies have to have a serious point telegraphed in. The serious point that his life was too wound up was well established.
