Inexplicable 'R' rating
For one F-bomb?
That's my new favorite camel.
she used the word to refer to having sex. that's a no-no for 13-year-olds watching. it's ok to use it as an expletive, though; that would merit a pg-13 rating.
shareIs that rule still true, that even one F-bomb referring to intercourse automatically generates an R-rating? So a PG-13 film can have a few "F-yous," but if someone says "F me," it's always going to be a R?
shareEllen Page's line saying they could *beep* in the car was the reason it got the R rating. Using the f-word as a term for having sex gets you an R.
If the line had been changed, it would have been PG-13. I don't think the rating change would have meant much at the box office since most of Woody Allen's fans are adults anyway.
Really? So if a character says "beep" you, and only once, it's a PG-13, but sex gets an R? I think I'd better re-watch This Film Has Not Been Rated". Not that I expect it will help...

If you say, "What the "beep" is that!?!" then that can be in a PG-13, though there is an unofficial limit to how many they will allow in a PG-13 movie. If you use the f-word several times in a non-sexual way, then you could still get an R. However, using the f-word in a sexual context will get you an R. Only using the f-word a few times in a non-sexual way can still get you a PG-13.
Another example is the movie 'Waiting for Guffman' which had mild language throughout. However, someone quotes a scene from Raging Bull where the F-word is used to mean sex and it pushed the film to being an R. Outside of that one scene, Waiting for Guffman would have EASILY been rating PG-13.
Wasn't Penelope Cruz, pubic hair on display when she put her knickers back on?
