Jesse Eisenberg?? seriously..?

the heck, he is too awkward for an actor.. can't believe no one ever noticed his poor acting.. he's like a robot and a weirdo at most of the time.. it would be better if they have Michael Cera or Shia LaBeouf as a preferable choice for that geeky or nerdy character.

totally agree.

It's Allen's fault, not Eisenberg's. Even the genius would fell flat in that empty output. A real talent has nothing to do in Mr. Allen's movie, but to compromise himself.

Listen to your enemy, for God is talking

reply

Totally agree! He's an awful actor. Don't know WHAT he is doing in front of the camera.. He shouldn't be there at all!

reply

Michael Cera is a clone of Jesse Eisenberg.
Shia La Beouf would have been interesting.

"Why don't you make like a tree... and get outta here?"

reply

Cera was big before Eisenberg.

Well I think he did an excellent job; better than other films he's been in for sure. Also, keep in mind that Woody Allen in his youth was a quirky, nerdy, awkward, timid Jewish man. Allen even stated he would have played Jesse's character if he were younger. I personally think Eisenberg's character was somewhat modeled after Allen. Besides, it's Woody Allen we're talking about; he's not exactly notorious for picking crappy actors, right?

I think you're right about the intent of the film, but I don't think Eisenberg pulled it off very well. Perhaps it was because of his earlier work in those high school/coming-of-age type movies, but his persona seemed very adolescent for an architecture grad student.

I would imagine he'll be able to get beyond that in his career, but in my opinion he didn't in this film

reply

I'll admit I do agree. It's hard to get past his previous films and picture him as anything other than a nerdy high school/college student with girl problems. I think this film is the one step that pushes him past that and gets him on the track to becoming a serious actor, rather than a young, goofy guy with OCD and social awkwardness. His acting could've been more distinguished in the film, but I don't think he did a bad job. He didn't do the best job he could've, trying to make himself differ from all of his other characters, but his costar Ellen Page didn't, either. They're both actors that are exactly like the characters they usually play, which can become a problem when they want to broaden their horizons.

i think paulo costanzo would have been better. i too didn't like jesse's acting

I guess I'll be the lone voice of dissent in that while it was far from brilliant or anything, I did enjoy Eisenberg's performance in To Rome with Love. Eisenberg's Woody impression was more along the better attempts take on being an Allenesque nebbish like Owen Wilson or John Cusack's as opposed to the dead-on but ultimately flat impersonations from "superior" actors Kenneth Branagh and Edward Norton in their respective Allen movies.

Having said that, I've never seen Jesse Eisenberg in any other films so I don't have the obviously negative associations everyone else here does with his performance in To Rome with Love.

terrible casting - also i thought he was supposed to be the younger alec baldwin in which case they should pic someone who is somewhat attractive.

I think he is a good choice for a contrast with Italian characters

"can't believe no one ever noticed his poor acting"

You honestly think no one else has ever thought "gee, he is a bad actor"???

Let me rephrase that, show me where ANYONE has ever said he is a great actor.
