RIFF Review: Mildly disappointing follow-up to Dogtooth

Atli Sig at Filmophilia.com found Alps a little to empty on the inside, especially from the director of Dogtooth.

Did you see it? What did you think?

Thank you for flying Church of England. Cake or Death?

It is quite the empty film. It makes a lot of jokes which lack the smart surrealism that made Dogtooth so interesting. To put it mildly, it's a lot of obscure pop culture jokes contained inside a really absurd plot which lacks honesty all around. It's a hard movie to recommend to anyone, really. I mean, I really liked Lanthimos' last one, but this... damn, it's just stupid. But at least Papoulia's wonderful in the lead role.

What's so wonderful about Papoulia in that role? She is almost the same as in Dogtooth, plus ugly.

I think those obscure pop refs are there for a purpose. the film seems to be about acting or inhabiting anothers persona. the pop refs are often film actors or performers. In some ways this is a satire on actors. the main woman seemed pretty hollow and lived a hollow life. Conversations about coffee cups early in the film demonstrate this. When she starts to play act hte dead girl, she absorbs the girl's persona. the empty shelled woman takes on the role of another, creating a more interesting life. this may be why she could not give up the role so easily. The final scne of the girl and her coach may point to this. the coach thru his rules about the girls music and routin is him living thru her. There was also an argumetn about the control of her music. She eventually gets her pop music, empty music, by the end but only when it is granted.

I can't say I liked this movie as much as Dogtooth, but I got some things out of it. I am having trouble putting it together.

Any comments or ideas would be appreciated. There IS meaning in this film.

Dictated, but not read.

I enjoyed it. It wasn't quite cohesive enough to be brilliant but it held a certain charm.

Compared to Dogtooth, it doesn't stand a chance.

But independently I found this to be a rather interesting film with some pretty good scenes. It wasn't great but it was worth watching.

"Hey, I didn't mean to cook your dog! But hey, those things just happen!"

Ι agree. I loved Dogtooth and found Alps to be mediocre: good idea, poor execution. One-dimensional scenario, while Dogtooth had so many layers and things happening. The film could be half an hour shorter, since it cycled and dragged too much with the central idea, untli the climax ath the end.

Having said that, i am Waiting for the new Lanthimos' film, even more me being Greek.
