2004

Can anyone PLEASE tell my why this film was set in 2004?...the newspaper being read by the central character was from 2004, also the mobile phones they were using were phones used in that era. So it is clear that it's set in 2004 and the directer clearly makes a point of making this clear.......BUT WHY??? what purpose did it serve????

the only reason I can think why they set it in 2004 was so they could use a diesel train with outward opening doors as it fits in nicely with the plot. I'm no train expert but I don't think these trains are used today as commuter trains. I thought they may have been in some sort of time loop......

I'm sure this is the reason why - to be accurate with the rolling stock.

From Wikipedia: "The film is set in 2004 when 'slam door' trains were still in service."

No its not a diesel, it's electric, run off the 3rd rail system, the power collected from a 'shoe'that runs along the 3rd rail.
Looked like an old 4-VEP unit, which of course has slam door and no central door locking.
As for clmbing out of a window, not easy, and even harder if panicking !
