Huge Plot Hole, Ruined Movie

Huge plot hole that ruined my movie experience tonight.

When the train comes to a stop in the narrow tunnel (sandbags were placed on the rails) the passengers try the side doors. The doors won't open far enough to let them out. So what do they do? NOTHING!

If you remember there was the back exit that was simply secured with a latch (right next to the steering wheel braking system). The passengers even mentioned the door earlier in the movie and contemplated jumping out of the back when the train was still moving.

They could have simply unbolted the back door and walked out of the stopped train. I was also wondering why they didn't even try the other side doors? The train might only be part way into the tunnel and the side doors would work as well.

STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!

Even bigger plot hole...

Railway airbrakes require pressure to keep them off.
In the movie, there was no air pressure as the driver had disconnected them.
This would result in the brakes being automatically applied and locked, hence the train would be unable to move.

Even more STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!

Let me fill in that huge plot hole...

On modern trains you need air pressure to keep the automatic parking brake from applying, this happens when air pressure drops below a certain level...

On "slam-door" trains, there was no automatic parking brake or modern safety interlocks, if it was left at a station for a long period a manual handbrake had to be applied to prevent air loss and the train rolling away.

You have to remember that in the storyline the train was sabotaged, so with careful isolation of a few things you'd have a train with inoperative brakes. The character at the controls wouldn't have worried about his air gauges eventually registering zero with what he had in mind!

When watching a movie it's always good to remember that it is just that...a movie!...

This is the worst excuse for bad storytelling I've ever heard. Also yes, I too was very annoyed at the part where the train suddenly stopped, and apparently all the characters brain functions stopped with it. Otherwise a pretty enjoyable movie, too bad they left in such a stupid error.

Someone with your great knowledge must be terribly unhappy looking at any science fiction movie. You would have terribly unhappy attending “Henry V” at the Globe.

reply

Or they could've tried to exit through the windows ...

reply

This is exactly what I thought...they could have all climbed out the window they were just hanging their upper body out before entering the tunnel. Of course standing next to that train in the tunnel would have been uncomfortable, but if that train was finally stopped you couldn't keep me on it!

They could have simply unbolted the back door and walked out of the stopped train. I was also wondering why they didn't even try the other side...
LOL! I'd actually forgotten that! You're absolutely right.

reply

Wasn't that back lock bolted shut? The guy tugs on the lock but it doesn't come open, and he says if they could get it open they can jump. So I just figured it was locked. Also, they do try both sides when the train first gets stuck.

Finally - someone who paid attention!

reply

They should have at least tried to break the backdoor open. Tried to break the window with the fire extinguisher or something. Even if it didn't work the director owed it to the audience to show them try and fail rather than pretend that it wasn't even an option.

reply

well i dont know anything about how trains work. so none of the above made the movie any worse, for ME at least

reply

I wouldn't call this a plot hole, a more appropriate title would be a choice hole, and even this isn't exactly true. It's extremely difficult to think clearly in high stress situations, and to rationally make decisions.

Speaking of things they could have done, one of them was to go to the back door and using a makeshift raft attached to the train, to simply toboggan to safety, but as I said it's one thing to be in a comfort of your home and watch events unfold with perfect clarity and perspective and a whole other thing to be on that train.

Get out the train by simply walking out of it. Yes that would have made a great ending for a thriller. No wonder you know more about trains than scriptwriting.

What I couldn't understand was the fact that sandbags had been used to make the train stop but there was no police or armed response to meet them...who the heck placed the sand bags?

It's a shame because much of this film was excellent.

I do have to agree. Despite what has been said about the brakes already having been sabotaged to the extent that they were inoperable (so how did our girl get to work them at the end?) ... I, too, immediately wondered when the little boy wouldn't leave through the door why they didn't all try getting out somewhere, going through a window, whatever it took. Maybe there was something to do with being in a tunnel and at the mercy of succeeding trains.

For once, though, I would like to see a movie that made perfect sense, no matter how little suspense that might generate.

Goofs section is wrong is not a diesel electric loco it's a third rail electric loco (EMU) class 421. And first generation (DMU) diesel multiple units dident have engine compartments either as the engine was under the floor.
