Blade Runner 2049 (this) vs. the original "Blade Runner" (1982).

Which one did you like best and better and why?

And in your opinion, does this new one 35 years later even come close to the original one in your opinion? Even if you did like it?

The first one had more action. The second was much slower and unfortunately seemed like it was continually trying to play homage to the original which was a mistake on the director's part. If it had been cut down to a reasonable length then it would have been as good as the original though not the same type of movie as the original. The first was closer to an action movie the second closer to a thinking movie.

The first was best... It's just so sensual and aesthetically iconic...

The second was great in how it addressed the themes of the original, but also broadened them... Also strong in it's visuals and pacing was approrpriately slow to give room to process and reflect on the ideas... the problems of the second movie is that there are probably too many homages to the original and it's too much of a set up to a further sequel... and the score was too Hans Zimmery, but that is a mi.or niggle..

As far as I’m concerned, they’re both equally great achievements. However, I’m still partial to the first one.

While BR 2049 is riveting and practically flawless to me in every single way, Ridley’s immaculate direction, all the imagery and production values, Vangelis’ sublime score, the settings and atmosphere, and the performances by Harrison Ford, Sean Young, Rutger Hauer, Edward James Olmos, etc. are so mesmerizing and timeless to me, the whole film is slightly more impactful to me than the sequel.

That being said, Blade Runner 2049 is phenomenal and a very worthy sequel. Although it pays a lot of homage to the original, it takes the original’s ideas and themes and exands upon them in an intricate and brilliant way managing to create its own idenity in the process. And from a technical standpoint, it is a stunning work of art; it’s exactly what I had pictured a proper sequel to the original looking like. So yeah, it’s a great companion piece to Ridley’s film (a masterpiece in its own right).

I think Blade Runner 2049 is the better film.

Even though I love the the original it's not without some fairly significant flaws in my opinion.

The new film takes what was best about the original and creates a great story that respects the events and the aesthetic of the first film and expands on them without descending into in your face "LOOK! this is something you know!!" fan service.

Despite being a long and slow paced film it tells its story in its own time and it never feels like it's plodding. The visual effects and design are as impressive as the first film and obviously benefit from 30 odd years of technological progress. Also it was great to see such spectacular visual effects being used to provide backdrop and atmosphere and aid in the story telling rather than just being used for lots of big dumb action set pieces and loud explosions.

After many recent mediocre and disappointing sci fi adventure films I felt like this was the film I've been waiting to see for a very long time. I can't wait to see it again.

This is a great description of the movie.

The first one had much more atmosphere, considering it basically invented the whole neo noir /cyberpunk genre, the new movie was lacking exactly that, it was too clean too polished to be a blade runner movie

2049 - Pretentious, boring, a drag to get through, but beautifully made.
