Do I have to see the first one to enjoy this one?

Will it make any sense? Can I watch this series backwards? Or do you absolutely have to see the first one to get this one at all

Thanks

It would help to see part 1, yes.... Or at least read a plot summary and know the characters Deckard and Rachel.

You might enjoy it (some fans of the original had trouble with that), but if you ask me it’s best to first watch the original. Since important details relating to the first film are given in the sequel, it’s doubtful you will be completely lost if you see 2049 first. But I believe in order to better appreciate this film and perhaps enjoy it, you need to understand what made the ‘82 film work — at least from a filmmaking standpoint. Just being familiar with the concept of Blade Runner can certainly help, too. And another thing worth mentioning; the first one is known for its slow pace, and 2049 far exceeds it. Both masterpieces, as far as I’m concerned.

I would recommend to watch the original and skip the sequel. But then we all know you will not listen to anyone and will decide on your own.

Do you have to see Blade Runner? No

Would it be a good idea to see Blade Runner first? Yes

Would you start with the second season of Game of Thrones?

Jaws 2, Rocky 2, The Empire Strikes Back? Temple of Doom? Chamber of Secrets? Shrek 2?

See the original, and then see Blade Runner 2049.

Update:

I ended up going to see BR:2049, and enjoyed the hell out of it. You absolutely don't need to see the first one to really enjoy this one, my mind was put at ease from the opening second, as it starts with text on the screen explaining the basic situation of the world. From then on, the plot was pretty self-contained. Even when Harrison Ford appears, it's obvious from the setup beforehand who he was, and why Officer K was trying to find him. Just a great film, even all on its own.

Really great to hear that.

Appreciating it is one thing, but enjoying it is another. From hearing how much of an “unwatchable bore” it is (echoed by both fans and non-fans of the original), I figured it would be difficult for many viewers to find Blade Runner 2049 worth one’s time if they haven’t seen the original. But I agree, this is a sensational film all on its own, and I suppose seeing the original isn’t a requirement (though I still recommend you do) as long as you see this one with an open mind... and that especially applies to those who hold the original in the highest esteem.

Yeah it was quite a beautiful film. I enjoyed the pace & elegant structure. And of course the stunning lush visual landscapes. I'm glad I saw it in IMAX before it left.

You should see the first one and not see this one.
