You know, the only way to stop hollywood from ruining great movies of the past...

...is to stop going to the movies altogether. Just stop. I know it's going to be difficult -- In the U.S., it's a basic part of our culture, one of the only things that unites all the wonderful different cultures that are a part of the American family. We all love to go to the cinema on the weekends. But when was the last time you actually thought you were going to see something unforgettable at the movie theater? That feeling of excitement and anticipation over something new at the theater, I haven't sensed that since the early 90s, and even then, it was usually a let down. Nothing like the early 80s, when the big summer blockbuster movies actually delivered what they promised and, more importantly, were new, original movies.

Hollywood will continue to crank out sequels and reboots and whatever else they like to call this garbage until a MASSIVE number of people get smart enough to stop giving them their money. We don't need another BLADE RUNNER. We need something NEW. Something that speaks to this age, rather than attempting to coddle the nostalgic nerve-endings of the older crowd (not that the older crowd doesn't deserve movies either; they ALSO deserve something original, something that speaks to their lives RIGHT NOW).

Well.. if people attend the smaller original movies and genre movies then hollywood would make more of those... but they stopped going about 10-15 years ago...

The fact is that adults, and adult minded young people, aren't going to the cinema. They stopped going to the theatre long ago and only watch TV, if that (a poor surrogate)... The only people going to the cinema are comicbook fans, kids for disney/cartoons and the chinese for CGI fests...

The only exception is horror movie... horror fans have supported that genre and its still very strong.

Unless people actually pay for what they like, then hollywood wont make those movies... abstinence isn't going to help, they'll just make the toy ads that they're doing now...

Why is TV a poor surrogate? I find a lot of TV shows out right now are vastly superior in quality to movies nowadays. Do you mean in the sense that you don't gt the sense of wonder and magic as you do when walking into the theatre and grabbing your popcorn and bracing yourself for the film? If so then I agree. As far as writing goes though I think TV is outdoing film.

The only films I gravitate towards nowadays are French films and horror films like you said.

reply

Yes, that's broadly what I'm talking about, but I'd like to add that sometimes films can do things aesthetically and emotionally that even the best TV simply can't match...

Part of it is the scale, part of it is the budgets involved which allows for better cinematography, sound and such, but also there is something about the film format, the two-hour story, the focused audience attention in a dark room, that forces the director to focus on mood and atmosphere rather than trying to dispense information or move the plot along, which is something that I find a bit tedious in most TV...

I do agree, that there has been some really good TV in the past few years (excellent shows like Mad Men, etc...), especially in comparison to TV in the past, but while the best TV can explore themes and characters in far more detail than movies, it doesn't feel the same as watching a movie... You rarely get that dreamlike feeling binge-watching netflix

But if the audience doesn't demand these kinds of movies and they don't go out to the theatre to watch them, then we'll only see the TV versions... expanded over several seasons, a lot of side characters and continuous plot and information... It can be very engrossing when done well, but it's not the same thing as a movie... can we not have both?

If these remakes and sequels to classic old films then what's the problem? Sounds like you're hating on something because it's a sequel and you have your mind made up already that you won't like this film.

reply

Could you articulate a bit better so that your question makes more sense?

reply

If the remakes are great quality films who cares that they are being remade. It's better than original new films that are terrible.

reply

Please list all the "quality" remakes Hollywood has cranked out over the last fifteen years. I have yet to see a remake in the modern era that is a.) even half as good as the original and b.) remotely memorable.

There were great remakes in the past, when they weren't Hollywood's prime business. Carpenter's The Thing, the 78 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Cronenberg's The Fly, even the 88 version of The Blob. But that just isn't the case these days.

reply

You don't need to stop going entirely. Go watch other types of movies. The Snowman and Killing Of A Sacred Deer are upcoming original stories. Go see that.

reply

I'll be seeing this one, too.
