Was a great movie, until the 4 gangsters shot the AKs

I don't care how bad of a shot you are, 3 people blasting AK47s and 1 more lady firing a handgun should have killed both of them, if not at least 1. The gangsters knew they were coming, so they didn't get caught with an element of surprise. The distance between them and the gangsters were also very close, and they were out in the open with no cover. It was a great movie until this scene, which was a huge turn off.

I agree that the whole rain of bullets and only Brian gets hit in the shoulder was somewhat off. I wasnt a fan of the visual effects on the shooting as well - they could have spent a little bit more money on it to make it a bit more realistic. The first scene with the car and the two black guys shooting - the fire of the gun barrels were so "fake".

Other than that I think its the best LA Cop movie I seen in years.

reply

Yeah, I thought that too. Although the film did show the gangsters were already drugged up beforehand and most likely had no training with automatic weapons whatsoever (or even firearms and marksmanship in general). So firing wildly like that it is possible to completely miss the target which were moving as well. But still...

reply

I dunno, AK's are soooo inaccurate. They just stood there spraying, I thought right away they'd miss. They were just throwing around the barrels and screaming, it was kinda silly. But in a way made sense, they were gangsters. They both got clipped, I'm pretty sure I saw the Hispanic copper with a head wound. Blood running down his face.

reply

It's not being that bad of a shot, it's not like they were even aiming. They were just 'pointing.' I agree that it's KIND of unbelievable, but AK's are notorious for not hitting the target. Something like an MP5, etc, wouldn't be as wild to shoot. If you've ever shot an AK-47, it's basically a 'pray and spray,' the same with uzi's, mac-10's, etc. They aren't precision tools. Especially not black market, assembled from parts, not properly cleaned gang guns.

reply

Don't forget that they would have been shocked by the sound of the rifles in that corridor...it would have had the effect of a flash bang grenade...that and they obviously weren't aiming...no shoulder mounts or stock welds going on...and they definitely didn't know how to lead.

I don't care how many shots you fire at a moving target, if you shoot at where they ARE you will miss every time!

^^^ I'm the idiot? No kid...it is YOU that obviously knows nothing about guns and shooting other than your video games and TV...idiot!

reply

You must be a real spaz if you actually consider the AK spray and pray or maybe just played too many Counterstrike games. An AK might not be accurate from about 100m up with no proper training, but in an enclosed environment like that it's as easy as pointing and emptying your clip into the target.

reply

Go back to your video games...

I've seen crazier stuff happen. I've been face to face with people spraying an AK at me and my buddies. An AK is NOT a precise weapon at all. It's mainly designed for fire superiority. In other words, to keep the enemies heads down. It's not point and shoot. You need to OPERATE the weapon properly. The recoil itself on an AK will pull the barrel up and you will shoot high every time if you don't know what you're doing. It's all about well placed groups ;)

reply

Well said tokyostreetkiller, like it was said in the Director's Commentary the reason they didn't hit their targets is because of the massive muzzle climb on an AK-47 on full-auto. Firing on full-auto depending on the firearm can really make it inaccurate. Yes they put down a lot of lead HOWEVER if it's ALL going over the cops heads then it is a plausible scene.

Those bangers wouldn't even know how to use the crappy iron sights that are on an AK-47 and aren't out at the local gun range on a Sunday trying to group their shots on semi-auto.

Looking at the scene again all they were doing where rocking their rifles side to side spraying-and-praying rather than "Tracking/Leading" the running cops.

This is the steps that's required to shoot a moving target:

Bubble, I was intensely satisfied when LAPD backup turned the rest of those scum into bullet riddled worm food.

Yeah definitely, it's hard to see but one of those patrol officers at the end shootout was firing a M4A1. Certain train officers and patrol sergeants are now issued with surplus M16s and carbines from the Department of Defence in the aftermath of the North Hollywood Shootout.

Back in 1997 all the police had were Beretta 92FS 9mm pistols and Smith & Wesson Model 15 .38 caliber revolvers as well as the 12-gauge Ithaca Model 37 pump-action shotgun (which only contained buckshot) which wasn't enough to penetrate the gunmens full body armor. It was ironic that the Police actually had to go to a local gun store and "borrow" some rifles that actually might put down the perpetrators.

Lastly the LAPD also allowed some Officers to carry pistols chambered in .45 ACP infamously used by Denzel in Training Day

Looked like the LAPD emptied everything in their inventory into those goons-kudos to the actors playing said 'scum', they were awesomely hate-able.

Hahahaha they had them dead to rights, I would have emptied my magazine into them even if they were down :) I just read a minute ago on Wiki that all

"LAPD patrol vehicles now carry AR-15s as standard issue, with bullet-resistant Kevlar plating in their doors as well".

I've heard about the bullet proof car doors, that's a great initiative so you can use your door as cover as for example the shootout at the start of the movie. However I didn't realize that every LAPD patrol car carries an AR-15. I mean they are still carrying the Remington 870 in the front of every patrol car.

I have seen patrol cars in my rather normal SF Bay Area Suburb & they all seem to have M-4s as well as the Remington....

How do you know that they are carrying M4s? Aren't they usually stored in the trunk or are they now clipped on a rack next to their shotgun? I've been getting all sorts of different information on what is on the Approved Carry List and it's even harder to know what they are allowed to carry as their BUG.

As of recently (2007) it is mandatory that SWAT team members are together, sometimes during routine patrol, and can be seen among the streets of San Francisco in BDU and traveling in a marked SUV, to ensure a quick and timely response to calls.

Have you seen the SWAT boys rolling around the city? It's not a bad idea and it makes civilians feel safer (and criminals more scared) if you see marked SWAT vehicles patrolling the streets. If the LAPD had the resources they should do it too however...

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the United States, with over 9,000 officers and 3,000 civilian staff, covering an area of 1209 kmĀ² (467 square mi) with a population of nearly 4 million people. The LAPD has had a rich and controversial history, including incidents of brutality and corruption.

For decades, the department has suffered from chronic underfunding. In comparison to most large cities, it has one of the lowest ratios of police personnel to population served; the current chief, William J. Bratton, has made enlarging the force one of his top priorities. (Bratton has been quoted as saying, "You give me 4000 more officers and I'll give you the safest city in the world.")

To give you a comparison LAPD and SFPD have about 26 police Officers per 10,000 people whereas New York has 42 per 10,000 residents.

Never seen any SWAT guys in years. I just peeked into a parked County Sheriff's squad car & there was the Remington in it's lock by the dashboard; meanwhile, in a bracket between the two front seats was the M-4--the plastic handguard & lack of carrying handle was very easy to see.

Could have been a very powerful ending if both died, but it was literally a "cop out".
