Grotesque film

The black & white made this visually interesting. But not enough for the storyline. A few people laughed but to my mind, they missed the underlying grotesqueness of the whole situation. The film offered a twist on the Snow White fairy story that was unrelenting dark and grotesque.

I guess in my reading of the story, I never found it ugly. But I did find this film to be so.

It's quite a long time since I've read fairy tales.
But consider this in the film. Snow White is in a catatonic state.
The dwarf kisses her and she awakes.
I would expect her state to be wonder or bewilderment, something like that.
Instead, the director finishes with a tear.
In the context, I'd say he's gone for a bizarre negative reaction.
I'm also calling that grotesque.

reply

Of course her waking up is a grotesque scene: it is a spectacle in a grotesquerie (a freak show).

I didn't find it dark enough. The humour, mainly relating to the villain, was verging on slap stick and I would have preferred Encarna to have been evil without comic relief.

The only way that I would agree the film was grotesque was the comatose Carmen becoming part of a circus and used for men to kiss in the belief they were Prince Charming. In truth the Grimm fairytales are dark and explore the underbelly of humanity.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

reply

I agree the Grimm stories are grim. But this film made everything ugly.

this film made everything ugly
What do you mean?

People were shown from grotesque angles. I mean mostly physically. But often psychologically, as well.

reply

I found it beautiful! And tragic, but beautiful

reply

Although I did not find the film particularly grotesque it is part of Spanish culture to exalt it as in esperpento. I found "Biutiful" extremely grotesque as compared to this film but equally as beautiful.
