Is Erin really a bad-ass to root for?

From the very start of the film Erin was the character I liked the most and was rooting for, and as soon as she revealed her super-survival skills and started kicking the psycho-killers' asses, and doing it in a way that ensured that instead of simply seeming dead they were actually dead, I was cheering her on even more.

But far form being the #1 bad-ass female horror lead as voted for by 'Total Film' magazine, I think we're actually meant to consider her actions in an ironic sense as completely unnecessary and borderline psycho, because ultimately, Crispian and his cohorts had no intention of killing her off. Her actions were to no avail as she would have been allowed to live anyway, and instead of being able to save any of the innocent members of the Davison family, she in fact added to the kill count by inadvertently killing an innocent cop.

In fact if Erin wasn't such a psycho and had spared Chrispian so that he might be able to answer for his actions once the cops had arrived, she wouldn't have been shot by the cop, the cop wouldn't have ended up falling into her trap, and she wouldn't have been suspected of being responsible for wiping out the entire family and their neighbours, as the credits sequence implies.

So, so much for being a 'bad-ass'.

Crispian said they weren't gonna kill her. It's easy to say when everybody's dead and your psycho girlfriend is holding a knife with fresh blood on it. But why should we believe him though?

reply

Crispian lied when he said Erin was going to be saved. They tried to kill her numerous times. If she wasn't such a badass, she would've died at the first attempt.

Put yourself in Erin's shoes. You're with this guy, who you love and trust presumably, who you've found out to be ruthless enough to plot the murder of his entire family without so much as a flinch. What if the other brother was the only one that had a contact with the killers? What if the cops couldn't find enough to convict Crispian? The first thing he'd do would be to come after you. What would you have done?

reply

^^^^ this, also the system isn't that good. He would probably go to jail for a few years since he didn't kill anyone and then all that money goes to him.

reply

Crispian was in charge of the plan, and I doubt he'd be willing to give his accomplices a cut of his inheritance if they had needlessly killed his girlfriend Erin.

The reason why the accomplices came close to killing Erin in the end was because her tough psycho-survivalist routine left them no option in defending themselves.

I don't think we can assume that a guys who made a plan to murder their family for money will have a healthy mind or care who is the leader, I don't think Crispian really is in charge of this, since Zee and Felix were going to murder Erin in the kitchen, I think Felix and Zee will betray Crispian at the end, which that will be easy since Crispian was always the weakest link.

They tried to kill her right from the start. The scene with the crossbow when the family members tried to run past the window with chairs. The killer waited with shooting till Erin ran past and if she had not ducked, she would have been killed.
So yes, Cris was lying.

While I am sure that Erin was meant to die too due to that arrow coming in the window straight at her in the beginning, I'm still wondering why they even bothered to wear masks. Sure, he was trying to mollify her during their face off by saying whatever he had to, but he made sense. There would have been suspicion on he and his brother if they were the only two left alive, so the killers wearing the masks only really make sense if they planned on having another witness that stood to gain nothing when the cops got involved.

Of course, who's to really say Erin was supposed to be that witness? MYbe it was meant to be Zee, but then again she was in on it too so they wouldn't have needed to wear masks anyway.

I dunno.

Badass is attitude and actions, consequences doesn't really matter.

Well firstly you're presuming someone in a situation like that KNOWS they're not going to die. Cornered people do crazy things. I mean honestly, you must have known you weren't going to die in that home invasion, you could have been out there feeding orphans. Shame on you for being a bad person.

That said, you're presuming Erin wasn't supposed to die.

That's what Chrispian SAYS the deal was. But if you rewatch you might notice that might not have actually been the case.

About 1 hour and 15 minutes in, the only people alive are Felix, Zee, Chrispian and Erin. In that case, the job would be done. That was the deal, right?

So why is Felix telling the killers to finish the job then? There was nobody left to kill except for Erin and Chrispian.

The killers then say "you two better be getting a big inheritance" or something along those lines, seemingly referring to only Felix and Zee... possibly NOT to Chrispian at all. I think Chrispian was being double timed by Felix. In which case Erin WAS always meant to die. Which explains why the first killer who died came at her with the axe in the first place.

Rewatch and it becomes pretty obvious she was NOT meant to live, at any point. She was meant to be killed as soon as Chrispian left.

Dude, regardless of what Crispian said, she was in a life or death situation with deranged killers. They WERE offing the family too, literally every same human being would try to kill them back and not take chances

reply

He was lying lol. If she didnt kill him he wouldve killed her.
