Did Dicaprio really smear his OWN BLOOD over that woman's face?

I know that Leo famously cut his hand open by smashing it on a wine glass during the skull/phrenology scene, but did he actually then smear it on the face of the actress playing Brunhilda? That's class, if so: the actress' reaction is so realistic it MUST be true!
