Dubbed version okay except....

I normally do not mind dubbed anime. It allows me to focus on the artwork a little more. And this is a movie that deserves such attention. When possible I prefer to watch the movie both ways, subbed and dubbed. So that I can concentrate on the story and alternately the graphics.
However this is difficult when the voice talent has a VERY recognizeable voice. It distracts from the movie.
One recent example was 'From up on Poppy Hill" With Aubrey Plaza as one of the main characters. I love Aubrey Plaza, but her voice and delivery is very idiosyncratic.
The same can be said for Dana "Master Shake" Snyder. He has a wonderful sense of timing and delivery. However he too often delivers lines EXACTLY as he has on both ATHF and Venture Brothers. Especially when it is the same line a prior character has used. (Lazy?)
If anyone from the Manga/Anime import companies happens to read this.
I 100% did not buy my ticket to see this movie based on voice talent!
I bought the ticket based on who made the movie!

About the movie, it is one of the more beautiful Anime I have seen in a long time. It reminds me in parts of both "Princess Mononoke" though with more subdued colors, and even of some Ozu films in it's relaxed admiration of ordinary rural Japan.
I was quite blown away with the heavy attention to detail in the backgrounds, architecture and mannerisms.
I also have to say that the imagery of the boars very much invoked "Mononoke". And some of the more wild scenes reminded me of Spirited Away.
In short, good movie, but stick to subbed if you know who Dana Snyder is.

Now I have to watch it dubbed just to hear Dana Snyder.

Can't stop the signal.

I just saw this and was surprised first that it was dubbed since so little anime gets dubbed. Then, that the dubbing was so well done. Even the Disney dubbing isn't always adding much. This is a great example of English dubbing done right.

I watched it in Japanese with subtitles. The dubbed versions tend to be annoying although I don't know about this one.

In the English dub the mother is awful. She sounds like a squeaky teenager more akin to the sister of Momo than her mum. Otherwise I thought all the other characters were done well.

I've watched Anime in Japanese with subtitles and the characters always seem more harsh than they do in an English dubbed Anime. That's just how it sounds to someone in America with no Japanese language skills.
