Disappointed

Let me first off say that I've never liked Tosh.0. Thought it was super cheesy, hackey, and just plain unfunny.

A friend convinced me to watch Completely Serious since we were bored and I'm always open to watching stand-up. I went in obviously pessimistic and quickly changed my opinion on him in the first few minutes of the special.

Ever since then I've been stoked on him solely as a stand-up comedian... so I was hyped when I saw the commercials and ads for this new special. Also caught the preview videos they had online and it seemed to show the few new good jokes he had in his act.

I was pretty disappointed. Seemed like the jokes weren't as elaborate, unique, and vicious as the ones on Completely Serious.

If Completely Serious was a 10/10 for me, this would probably be around a 6.5/10. Happy Thoughts definitely didn't get the same reaction out of me as his previous special.

I was at the filming of the special and I thought it was super funny. There were quite a few more extra jokes that they didnt show on the TV airing. I would watch the extended, uncensored cut that comes out tomorrow because I'm assuming that they will put in the remainder of his jokes. I still thought it was funny.

I wasn't quite as taken aback by Happy Thoughts as I was by Completely Serious, maybe because I was new to Tosh before then, but I still thought all his jokes were spot on and always funny.

I completely agree. I really enjoyed Completely Serious, and found it very tight and smart. Happy Thoughts seemed unfocused, and many of the jokes lacked impact beyond his sarcasm. I can only assume that he has been too busy with Tosh.0 (and spread too thin) to create a proper set for Happy Thoughts, but I certainly found myself bored through a lot of it.

I was fine with the material, most of which was pretty clever. My issues with this have to do with the production end of things. The image was blurred and fuzzy, as if it was all just slightly out of focus. Was this thing shot on the cheap?? And maybe I'm wrong, but it sure seemed like the audience reaction was completely pumped and sweetened to the point of annoyance.

I get the Comedy Central tie in airing, but commercial breaks sure do cripple the flow of a performance that depends on rhythms and timing.

I watched it online, so the commercial cuts were taken out, but I did notice the awful amount of fake laughs they pumped in.

There was a point were they had it sound as if the entire crowd was clapping and cheering and they cut to a view of the actual crowd who looked completely dead.

Agreed. I saw it on Comedy Central yesterday, and while it was entertaining, it didn't quite do it for me. There was nothing that really had me laughing hard. Guess I should check out Completely Serious.
