Is Dracula really the villain?

I kind of like this movie in a guilty pleasure sort of way.

But as I watch it I realize... Dracula isn't all that bad. Let's look at the obvious.

1. The town was destitute. He pulled them out of debt.

2. He had schools and other important things installed.

3. He obviously keeps some kind of order (Even if they are told not to go out alone on Walpurgis Night). The easiest way to not be fed upon - don't go out alone at night and keep your cross on. Duh.

4. Instead of killing Jonathan he gives him immortality.

5. Instead of killing Renfield he saves him from his imprisonment and restraints.

Van Helsing, on the other hand, broke into Lucy's house without knocking. Then broke into the blacksmith shop and killed a man (we knew the man was working for Dracula, he did not) just for walking in on him. That could have been the Black Smith himself for all he knew! In fact Van Helsing kills at least two humans.

Whose the villain in this again?

Exploiting the townsfolk, terrorising people into doing his dirty work, effectively date-raping the women with hypnotism or decapitating and killing people with swords or as a giant mantis? Yes, he is the villain.

You're worrying ;)
