Dario Argento Dracula 3d - FAILURE

I really hope Dario Argento will get the same rep as Uwe Boll after this movie is released. Just visited the site of the movie and watched the "behind the scenes" documentary. It`s pathethic. Looks cheaper than the BBC version. Comparing this to any version and I really mean any version (including the Wes Craven bullcrap) is totally insane. This will go straight to DVD-BLURAY hope you all got hdmi+3d television sets at home. FFC`s Dracula was a masterpiece of its time compared to this load of crap. This in 3d will look stupid and dull. I wonder who they hired to compose the music ? cause from what I`ve heard it sucks. It can`t ever top Wojciech Kilar`s score. That`s like comparing Lil Wayne to Hans Zimmer. Asia Argento ...no place for her in this movie. She sucks on all accounts. No acting skills, nothing. Main actor ..the german fellow is a good actor but not for this. I saw him in many movies and I liked him...but hes no Dracula. Nobody will ever top Gary Oldmans performance. Overall...this movie will be BAD...even worst than I expected. Really had hopes for this one. Curious what they`ll make of "the last voyage of the demeter" maybe that one will raise the bar.

reply

Don't have too high hopes in regard to Last Voyage of the Demeter. I heard it's pretty much being treated like Alien but with Dracula in place of the alien.

reply

That's what Pseudo Vampire fans who think the Twilight is the worst thing ever want, Vampires that are just Zombies or Goblins.

"TRANSYLVANIA, 1893.
One night in the woods adjacent to Passo Borgo, at the foot of the Carpazi mountains, a couple of young lovers, Tania and Milos, secretly meet. On her way home, Tania is chased and overcome by a “dark shadow” that kills her. In those days Jonathan Harker, a young librarian, arrives at the village hired by Count Dracula, a nobleman from the area. Tania’s body mysteriously disappears from the cemetery. In the meantime Harker, before going to Count Dracula’s castle, takes the opportunity to visit Lucy Kisslinger, his wife Mina’s best friend as well as the daughter of the local mayor.

Upon arriving at the castle, Harker is greeted by Tania, brought back to life from the dead and made vampire, who tries from the very beginning to seduce him; however they are interrupted by Dracula’s entrance welcoming Harker. The following night Tania tries again to bite Harker, she is close to his neck when she is stopped by the count who gets the upper hand and it is he himself who bites Harker’s neck, however allowing him to live. The following day, weakened but still conscious Harker attempts to escape, but as soon as he is outside the castle a large wolf with a white lock assaults and savagely kills him. Meanwhile, Mina, Harker’s wife, arrives in the village and is guest for a few days at the home of her dearest friend Lucy Kisslinger, who will also be bitten and vampirized. The day after, Mina, worried about her husband, goes to Count Dracula’s castle. Their encounter makes her forget the reason for her presence there. She is completely under the count’s influence; the count had orchestrated the events leading up to their encounter; in fact Mina looks exactly like his beloved Dolinger, who died some centuries ago.

Upon her return to the Kisslinger house, Mina learns of the death of her dear friend Lucy. The sequence of such strange and dramatic events summons the aid of Van Helsing, vampire expert of the techniques used to eliminate them. Van Helsing, aware of the circumstances decides to act swiftly and prepares the tools needed to combat vampires. He directs himself to the center of evil, Count Dracula’s castle.

Meanwhile Dracula, in the village, kills the inhabitants who rescinded their pact, while Van Helsing, inside the castle, is able to definitively eliminate Tania. Dracula, intent on his desire to reunite with his beloved wife, leads Mina, completely hypnotized, to the castle where Van Helsing is waiting. He has decided to engage in a deadly fight with his evil foe. During the struggle Van Helsing loses his gun with the silver bullet and Mina, still under Dracula’s spell, gathers it and tries to aid Dracula, but she misses the target and involuntarily kills him. The special silver bullet transforms Dracula into ashes; but his spirit lifts the ashes into the air and uniting, they shape into a large bat with a mocking grin…"

So basically the story has nothing to do with the book. It`s just the name that they use to grab some money and the 3d hollywood money grabber. Shees , I feel sorry for the people that are actually gonna pay money to see this one. Dracula in 3D, like that matters, they don`t even have money to build a fcking machete castle and they make it in 3d. Dario is desperate to grab some dineros afaik. Too bad.

What's all this? i thought they were making a book accurate version?

reply

If you want a copy of the book, read the book and stop sucking

reply

If that is the story of the film (and I hope it isn't cause that sounds like crap) they shouldn't call it Dracula. Because it isn't Dracula. It's a new film with a bunch of characters with the same names. It's like having Sandman kill Spider-Man's uncle. Oh, they did do that. Huh.

reply

Its called ADAPTATION. You moron.

reply

To be honest, I don't have high hopes for this one either. The last time Argento tried his hand at a period horror he turned in The Phantom of the Opera; not only his worst film, but one of the worst films of the last twenty years...

Argento is also incapable of getting a decent performance out of his daughter. I don't agree that she's a bad actress; she's given fine performances for other directors, such as Catherine Breillat, Abel Ferrara, Olivier Assayas, Tony Gatlif and George A. Romero, to name a few. But when she works with her dad (like in Phantom of the Opera or the possibly even worse The Mother of Tears), she's just a dead object. I suspect she's the kind of actress who really needs a strong director to guide her, and Dario, as we all know, isn't really interested in actors.

That said, the casting of Rutger Hauer and Thomas Kretschmann should be interesting, and Gabriele Lavia is also worth seeing in an Argento film. These actors have so much experience they can probably deal with Argento's notorious "hands-off" approach to directing and just get on with it; like Max Von Sydow in Sleepless.

reply

That's intelligent, reviewing the production value on the behind-the-scenes footage.

Although Argento hasn't made a good film in years please remember that he is responsible for some of the best horror/giallo films of all time. Presumably you haven't seen Suspiria, Inferno , Tenebrae, Opera, Deep red, 4 flies on grey velvet or The bird with crystal plumage ?? Don't forget also that he had a hand in Dawn of the dead and released his own cut which is arguably better than Romero's ! These films are nothing short of genius. If you haven't seen these films check them out, start with Suspiria and Tenebrae. To compare him to Uwe Boll is ridiculous !!!!

reply

I agree that, at one time, Argento was a great director. The films that you have mentioned (Suspiria, Tenebrae, and even Opera and others) are all really great films.
But something, something BAD has happened to Argento.....not sure how, not sure why. Lately, he turns out nothing but crap, and now, a 3D movie???? That is not his style at all.

3D is just feeling a resurgence lately, and now EVERY movie seems to be jumping on the 3D bandwagon, so much so that 3D has just become trite lately.

I might watch this when it comes out on DVD, but it will likely be a total trainwreck......

I think what's hurting this film most is the title. That 3D has an unneded cheese factor to the name. Even if they called it 'Horror of Dracula' like the Hammer Horror movie that might be better.

Personally, I liked The Stendhal Syndrome and Sleepless, both relatively recent Argento films. Compared to the rest of his output over the last decade or so, I thought they were fine, psychological returns to form for the giallo master, certainly not on par with, say, Deep Red or Tenebre (or even my guilty pleasure favorite, Phenomena), but very good on their own. It does bother me, however, to see him tackle an umpteenth retelling of the Dracula legend (particularly in the wake of the tons & tons of bland vampire flicks lately...) Hope it doesn't suck (like Phantom of the Opera and Mother of Tears -- now those were embarrassing.)

reply

Argento is in real need of a return to form but unfortunately I don't think this will be it . At least we all still have his excellent back catalogue to enjoy !!!!

reply

yeah, he made all those good films years ago... i'm not sure if he's lost the plot, but i just saw the trailer for 'dracula 3d' and i'm a little concerned to be honest. the way the actual film looks appears to be completely boring, i remember when the colours in his films used to pop (ie - suspiria).

i think what made argento's older films so good was the ridiculousness of them, but this new one seems so tame (not crazy enough) in comparison. oh well i'm being fussy.

reply

Argento *was* talented, but nowadays his output is definitely closer to Uwe Boll's in quality than Hitchcock's. Most of the 70s generation of horror directors has lost their touch.

reply

Dario and many other Italian exploitation directors of the 70s were spoiled by relatively big budgets and were in tune with fashion of that time much more than now. Dario was born into an entertainment family, his father Salvatore produced all of his better known films, which means he did his best work not when pushed to the limits, but when he was given freedom. It shows in his later films, where the quality suffers. He's got what it takes, but he needs that extra money.

reply

Nobody will ever top Gary Oldmans performance.

Lugosi, Lee... even Langella were better than Oldman as the Count.

Oldman is a fantastic actor, but he was all wrong for Dracula. Way too short. (Harker should not be taller than Drac.) That stupid-ass Japanese granny beehive 'do they made him wear is simply embarrassing -- even more embarrassing than Keanu Reeves' terrible performance.

reply

If Oldman was way too short for Dracula, what does that make Kretschmann? He's even shorter.

reply

Regarding Dario's recent work being a mixed bag you're probably right.

Yet he is working with one of his best crews in YEARS so the odds seem in his favor.

Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead

reply

Oh why do they have to imitate Dan Curtis' Dracula? This divergence of a lost lover was acceptable and more satinized in that version but crappy in the Coppola version and probably even worse, much worse, in this one.

Dario, you disappoint me. Even abominable, nescient dilettantes such as Claudio Fragasso would probably be able to a better adaptation if he tried.

reply

it seems there is a desire that the movie actually to be a failure before it be released. There are absurd opinions of people who obviously do not understand most of Argento's work.

reply

Believe me, I'm a fan of Argento (not necessarily big fan) and appreciate his earlier works and have seen less famous films of him such as his own contributions to his own TV production Door into Darkness and also his Five Days in Milan.

Maybe this film could be a good standalone films if I try to put aside my pretensions of how a Dracula film should be. I've just never enjoyed the concept of Dracula having a lost lover. It was most acceptable in the Dan Curtis / Jack Palance flick but not much more.

I'm still waiting for Argento to go back to his own area of expertise but of course with necessary innovations and accommodations. I think Sleepless is the best thing he's done since Phenomena/Opera.

reply

I just hope this is better than Giallo which was the first Argento film I thought was truly bad. I thought Mother of Tears was so over the top it was fun but Giallo which was NOT a giallo but a very bad attempt at something more like Hostel only much much worse. Even the music was awful. I don't care if it's 3D if the camera work and style gets back to the Hitchcock here's an amazing camera sequence you've never seen before. What if that long tracking shot in Tenebre that moves across the building were in 3D? Even Inferno had many shots like the underwater sequence that would have been something in 3D. That doesn't make this movie good but I hope it depends on will the old style Argento appear or will it be the dull nothing of Giallo? Argento classics are never strongest in story but in style and sometimes shocking violence. I admit there are not that many areas in Dracula for wild violence like Deep Red but I will judge only after I see what it looks like not what it's about.

reply

I know, I know, you love Coppola's Dracula.
I love Hammer's Dracula.

We'll talk about this movie when it comes out. Probably it will be a poor movie, but I don't know yet. The only thing that's completely clear is that you adore Coppola's Dracula. Maybe you should quit watching vampire flix, nothing can top Coppola.

BTW There was a time when Argento was a great director, maybe someday the spark comes back. I liked a lot Pelts.
