A strange anomaly I spotted

I'm not usually one to easily pick up on little things or mistakes in movies but this one somehow caught my attention. When Nate was up ahead urinating against a tree in the snow, and Laura and Patrick were behind him about 15-20 feet away, fixing the tent, there was a line that was loudly spoken that didn't match up to what either Nate or Pat was saying. It was most definitely Patrick's voice but it didn't fit in with what he was doing.

The voice said "Hey you guys down on the edge of this ridge all the snows melted. Hey come give me a hand."

At the beginning of the sentence you see Patrick fixing the tent and he is definitely not speaking. His lips aren't moving. The camera switches over to Nate who is mumbling something else while you can still hear the rest of that sentence.
It's sort of hard to explain but the scene starts at 13:50 into the movie.

Oh, and another thing. If it was a timing error why would Patrick have yelled "Hey You guys"? Laura was right next to him. Only Nate was slightly in the distance.

I am wondering if this was just a voice over mistake in the movie or what it intentional for some reason?

DesertRay had alerted me to that very same scene. Upon viewing, I would think it was just a voice over mistake. If it was to be intentional, to me it was way too subtle.

Hmmmmm that is odd

This kind of thing is very common if you really look. For an example, there's a scene in The Goonies where one of the bad guys bursts into song, but you can see in the sideview mirror that his mouth is closed.

I remember the line but didn't notice the sound anomaly. I thought it was Nate who was talking. It would be logical for him to notice, since he was the one standing away from the group at the end of the ridge.

I suppose this was meant to be an early sign of the aliens - maybe their ship melted the snow? - but really it's not that unusual to see a bare ridge in otherwise snowy terrain. If the wind has swept off a lot of the snow cover on a southward-facing slope, the sun will melt the remainder, even in very cold weather. It was early bit of creepiness only because Nate (or Pat, if that's who spoke the line) pointed it out.

I watched the movie a second time, and my earlier impression was correct. It's definitely Nate, who's standing away from the group at the edge of the ridge, who makes the remark about melted snow. It's his voice, not Patrick's. Patrick says something immediately afterward that sort of overlaps with Nate's remark, so I can see how confusion could arise, but it's Nate who says the line.

reply

This thread is ridiculous. It's an over-dub. Maybe they had a mic failure, maybe the wind blew, maybe the actor said the wrong line. Who cares? It was an over-dub. A correction in post. This isn't the kind of movie that's going to have clever little easter eggs.

reply

It may have been an over-dub, but there's nothing wrong with it. Nate says the line while facing away from the others, so you don't actually see him talking, but it's definitely his voice. He sounds appropriately distant from the others, and he's the only one facing the right direction to see what's being described. So, yes, a pointless thread because in fact there is no "anomaly".
