What you have described is actually false.
The fact one person thinks something is funny where as other people hated it is in fact just a matter of perspective. In fact comedy is one of those things very open to differing points of view. you might find one show excellent that another hates.
Take Big Bang Theory, one of the most popular comedy shows on at the moment. Does everyone like it? no? so if that is the case, based on your theory, it cannot be funny. Do the same with friends, one of the most popular comedies ever. does popular = good comedy, no. Following your example, because i did not like friends, it was not funny. A lot of people might disagree with me but I am right, and they are all wrong. Whitney got 2 seasons, so enough people liked it for it to get that far.
Your kind of post is typical of internet forums, where you consider your opinion to be some kind of fact, but the fact the op said they liked it, means it was funny, at least to some, so by inference, you are wrong.
A lot of shows get canned after a short period. I'm sure you liked some that did not make it far. So does that mean your taste in shows is bad? No, it just means you liked something others did not. It's called taste.
You can apply exactly the same argument to Music, in fact you can do it in reverse. A lot of music snobs think that as soon as a band gets popular they are no longer good(Muse for example). so by being popular, they stopped being good.
Personally I find the whole thing rather funny. All it proves is that taste cannot be classified as good or bad, only personal(with a few extreme exceptions).
So your statement is completely erroneous.
