mirror, mirror on the wall

Early in the film, Kancha's pounding a sliver of mirror in the sand and tells his father he doesn't want to see mirrors. Later, during a meeting with Rauf, the latter tells him a mirror shows him with a different appearance and we get the briefest glimpse. What was his problem with mirrors?
