Why did he speak german weird?

The 'r's in German are not like in Spanish. Why did Dr. Mengele pronounce them that way if he was german?

Good catch. A couple of possibilities:

1. The actor portraying Mengele is originally from Spain. Even though he speaks German fluently, he may have some residual accent that would be noticed by a native German.

2. The film was filmed & first released in Argentina. The director may have asked for this pronunciation to appeal to the Argentinian audience.

3. The film is based on a true story. Historically, Mengele may have adopted a similar pronunciation in order to better blend with native Spanish speakers. He must've done something to disguise
himself; he aluded capture for over 30
years.

I'm not sure if any of these are the real reason. A film is composed of thousands of decisions & more than a few accidents. With a budget of only $2M, you can bet there were more than a few 'drathers' that were simply unattainable. One of those may have been a dialect coach (usually around $15-20K). If I found an actor as perfect as Brendemuhl for my lead, I'd be more than happy to accept a little more roll to my R's.

Nice points armgecko! Both one and two are my bet too. Catalonian actor Àlex is fluent in german but he uses most of the time catalonian and spanish in productions. Some english too.
Also is a way to emphasize the german ascent in the film. Anyway, small drawback great acting IMHO.

In the following interview with the film's writer/director, she says of Alex Brendemuhl, "His German was perfect; he could reproduce exactly the accent of the region Mengele was originally from."

#3 IS INSANELY WRONG! THIS FILM IS NOT BASED ON A TRUE STORY!

So there was no Nazi doctor named Josef Mengele, who did not flee to Argentina, who was not pursued by Nazi hunters? Okey-dokey. Thanks so much for the enlightenment, genius.

IQ scores are similarly 'based' on intelligence. In Einstein's case here, the score must be hovering around 15. Of course, it could be 25. Certainly no higher than 30. That would be an outright lie.
