“Hunter Killer”? Really?

Just saw the trailer on The History Channel. First I ever heard of this film.

The title...I dunno, right now I’m calling it the lamest movie *title* ever.

reply

That's what they are called. They hunt...they kill.

They're also known as "attack" or "fast attack" submarines, but "hunter-killer" sounds cooler for a movie title.

reply

The navy calls their subs in the HK class the ones designed to stalk soviet subs HK being hunter killer.

reply

So I’ve learned :-)

I should have done some simple research.

Odd though, I have seen probably 95% of the submarine films out there, and I swear until this film I’ve never heard those two words together like that. Either that or it’s the beginning of the end for my grey matter.

The soviets have a different name for their fast attack subs but during the cold war they were classified so we just started giving them our own names. Akula is what we named the russian version of the HK subs. I've also heard of HKs being called Los Angeles class as well.

reply

"Hunter-Killer" is just an non-official term for "attack submarine" - they mean the same.
An attack submarine is any submarine designed to hunt down and sink enemy ships and submarines, that's it.

There is non such thing as "Russian version of hunter-killer subs."
Any Russian attack submarine (Akula, Victor, Sierra, ...) is a hunter-killer, not just some "version" of it.

The title is spot on.
Too bad it makes no difference, as the movie is a disaster in every aspect.

reply

Yes. They didn't hunt nor kill but were hunted and nearly killed so I guess the movie would have benefited from a comedy element and being named "Hunted and nearly Killed" as there were so many characters that were just silly.

Eh, it wasn't that bad. It's not Crimson Tide or Hunt for Red October, but it's not meant to be. It's a B-movie and trying to deliver B-movie thrills, and it does a fairly good job of it. The sequence where they rescue the Russian president, for instance, is actually pretty great.

My only real complaints are that the story gets a little hard to follow at times and the CGI looks like exactly what it is (animation). But overall I found it interesting enough and don't regret watching it.

6.5/10

Agree, I didn't expect much from this movie. Enjoyed the rescue sequence too.
