awkward tagalog

just saw this film. i thought the plot was good and realistic (i lived in Manila and am a Filipino myself) but the dialogue was so awkward and just sounded so contrived. at times i thought the writers used google tranlate for the script haha. the acting was okay but chemistry between the characters was lacking. overall, i would say the movie is good and honest. this is a story that happens everyday in metro manila.

I thought the chemistry was a bit off at first, but it didn't bother me for the rest of the movie. Not knowing the language may have been a benefit. Loved it!

My mother noticed this to. She left the Philippines at a young age, so she can't speak Tagalog fluently, but she can understand it. The translations were off, and that's sort of natural when you're dealing with languages from 2 different cultures. I think that they try to Americanize it, so when westerners view the movie, the translation will sound good to them. Anyhow, my mother also mentioned that the main characters wouldn't be speaking Tagalog, and that the people from Banaue speak a different dialect.

If you're right, it's because I misinterpreted the beginning of the film, or it was because I fast forwarded through part of the beginning. We only had 2 more hours to watch it, so we were in a hurry, because our rental time was coming to an end. Now that I think back on it, all I remember is the Banaue rice fields in the beginning. I also remember Oscar's co-worker(s) mentioning him being a farmer from Banaue before moving to Manila. Either way, Banaue was mentioned. So if Oscar Ramirez isn't from Banaue, where did they come from? I do know that it was from somewhere north of Manila.

Agreed that you don't watch films in fast forward. Holy hell why even bother??

I find it incredibly hard to believe that there were no factories anywhere in the entire province for them to HAVE to be from somewhere else before moving to Banaue. Or they could have grown up in Banaue and moved back after the factory closed. You all are acting like they were originally from another freaking country.

They are from Banaue. They would have spoken a different dialect. It's also a movie. Get over it.

The people you idolize wouldn't like you.

Lol, finally someone that's not making a big deal of the most insignificant details. As for fast forward, I watched it On Demand, and I saw the whole thing almost twice. I only speak English, but my mom can understand Tagalog, because she was fluent as a child. So I saw the whole thing, and convinced my parents to watch it. Unfortunately, I had rented it On Demand. For those of you that have never rented a movie through your cable company, you have 1-2 days to watch the movie. For my family it was day 2, and there were less than 2 hours left to watch it. Not knowing if my parents would see the end of the movie, which is always an important part of a movie, I skipped the 1st 10 mins of the movie, and tried to explain what I remember. You act as if I we watched the a significant amount of the movie in fast forward. If we were that dumb, we'd return to the Philippines just in time to vote for Manny Pacquiao to become president.
