Was she a bar girl who just allowed men to fondle her? Or was she a prostitute? From the action you see, she seems to be a bar girl. But she has a mournful look when she's back in the dressing room. The manager in a later scene says if she wants to stay employed both she and her 9 year old daughter have to work.
Althea Vega was beautiful in this movie.
The director left it to the viewer to judge but the answer is obvious. The character is realistically portrayed and the actress captures the essence perfectly of a Mother who will do anything to feed her family but is ravaged with guilt and the destruction of her self-esteem.
A hard movie to watch in places due to the realism, Disney it isn't!
At one scene she was shown in an aquarium type viewing room with a number on her. These types are full-on prostitutes so yes she went to offer sex for money.
