Is there something else he could have done? *** spoiler ***

Please allow your minds to wander free and let me know if you feel there is another scenario in which Oscar might have been able to live and be with his family.

reply

Yes of course he could have done what any man should do in his situation and that is to come clean. If he would have came clean it is very likely for him to get a monetary reward, although he likely wouldn't be able to continue working there as he would've ratted out his partner.

I kind of liked the ending but it's also pretty stupid. He could have carried out the exact same plan - pretend to be stealing the wrong key after taking a secret imprint of the correct key - but then he should have just surrendered with his arms raised as soon as the alarm went off or whatever. Dying wasn't at all necessary for his plan to work.

reply

But were his bosses shoot-first-ask-questions-later types?

reply

actually they only shoot him in what they think is self-defence. When he realises he's not going to be able to escape without having to harm anyone, his expression/reaction suggests he knows he's now got to die.
So when he comes out of the toilet, he points his gun in the general direction of Budda and the other guys but deliberately fires into the air (the scene earlier where Ong's helping him get used to firing the gun suggests that if he wanted to hit them here, he easily could have done), knowing that they'll then have to shoot back

reply

i don't think that would work actually - he'd be arrested presumably, I don't know that they would give his wife his personal effects in that case. They'd take him into custody and probably take all of his personal effects and keep them while he's on trial or whatever. Don't they take your stuff when you go to jail and put it in a box for the duration? In the meantime, his wife and kids would starve.

But I do think he could've possibly come clean... would anyone believe him though? especially over Ong - who was a longtime, trusted employee?

A chat with you and somehow death loses its sting.....

reply

Agreed with last comment.

They only thing he possibly could have done was go back to the country where they were already starving and try that again. Once they told him that he wasn't going to be able to get paid because of Ong's death, he was screwed.

Actually, when the landlord for the 2nd apartment (the one that Ong arranged for him) arrives, he say something to the effect of "who are you? Where's Ong? Where's my rent?". So Ong's story about how he's framed him in that apartment was a bluff to get Oscar to go along with the fake robbery.
In light of this, Oscar did have more chance of them believing him if he'd come clean - this landlord could even have been a witness - but given everything Oscar had going on at the time, it's understandable that he wouldn't have been thinking straight. I only caught this on my second viewing and I wasn't under the pressure that Oscar would have been!
