One aspect that freaks me out ...

There are many different things in this game that give me the creeps (creepy howls and snarls from afar, the "in your face" combat ... etc) but the one thing that gets to me the most is the blood when you smash off a walker's head on asphalt. The way it glistens in the sunlight and the texture to it makes it truly freaky. To me, it looks almost too real. I don't know about anyone else but every single time I see a walker with its head gone and blood spurting out over the sunlit ground, I get the shivers and want to shut the game off. Even the blood on the weapons you have after you've cut, bashed and sliced open the walkers is creepy. It doesn't work so well in a house or in water -- or on a crowbar or cleaver -- but on asphalt or a baseball bat it's genuinely scary. I don't have a fear of blood, but this game does give me a really good sense of realism.

I noticed the blood thing but it didn't bother me. I just put it down to detailed graphics (or gore) nothing more. It's good the way everything is done in the game. Just think about the poor Australians and Germans. They don't get the game intact. It's censored. Or in Germany's case last time I checked they got the game banned outright. The Germans and Australians are still in their "Mary Whitehouse era" we thankfully have, for the most part, moved on from that era here in the UK. She was an old skank that crusaded against most action and horror movies back in the 80s. She wanted them all banned. Ranting against things she knew *beep* all about. But what's new when it comes to her type.

See when you first appear in the jungle setting (or if you have it opened up just now). Go to the "River Village" the first village you come to. See the hut where Matatu is or whatever his name is (the one that gives you mission like to find his boat). Head up the stairs to the huts across the road from his. Stand there and look all around you while the volume is "turned up high" and just listen to the eerie as hell music in that section. VERY ATMOSPHERIC INDEED. Lucio Fulci would be proud of that music... and probably the game as well. No other game captures the undead apocalyptic vision as good as Dead Island does.

Agreed, the graphics and music were fantastic for the time. I don't see how people can justify the uber quick degradation of weapons though. IRL I've owned the same machete, ball bat, Axe and sledge hammer for 20 years now with heavy duty work performed all along. In gAme those tools barely last one confrontation against a group of undead. And the driving.. What? Are the cars made of balsa wood? Maybe everything on the game is made of balsa wood. Well.. Except the chain link fences and one inch diameter wooden posts that will stop your car on a dime.
