The show has changed since Randy...

Okay, I have loved this show since the pilot. But this season (and part of last season) is so different. They are making Max out to be stupid, and Caroline to be even more uptight and business greedy. I actually went back through the episodes from the last two seasons to try and figure out when the change happened. After some digging, I think the change happened around the time the girls were in Hollywood and met Randy. Suddenly the apartment is horrible (it was never great, but it was home and livable) with "Nail Patrick Harris" and they go to a guy who provides used bandaids out of a shopping cart for health care.

Seriously, what happened? The show always exaggerated things, as all comedies do, and Max's snarkiness was part of the charm. But she was a great waitress in the beginning, who worked multiple jobs to make ends meet, and suddenly both Max and Caroline are lazy waitresses that appear to live to make Han's life miserable. I just don't get it.

Anybody else see the difference in the show since they went to Hollywood? Am I imagining things? Has the change been happening for longer than that? Do you think the characters are just evolving?

I'm with you the writing has gone down hill, especially since the writers can't figure out what to do with the business,it seems that they just don't know anymore and have given up

reply

Yeah, it's like they gave them their shop/dream too soon, and don't know where to go now. Which is leading to drastic character changes and poor plot lines.

I think you're imagining things. You're imagining that this show used to be good, even though it has always been terrible.

I never understood trolls.. Why bother responding with nasty comments? If you don't like the show, why do you watch it, and/or why do bother reading discussion boards that are clearly about the show you despise?

Never understood trolls. Makes no damn sense to me.

I don't watch this show. It sucks. I'm just trying to provide a public service to let people know this show sucks so they don't waste their time with it.

reply

And you can say the show sucks without watching it because...? Granted it's lost a little of its charm this past season but it has a unique style of comedy and sense of itself that you can't help but love and admire.

reply

I can say it sucks because it does suck.

YOU ARE THE TROLL. Shut up. If you cared so much would shut your mouth. These comments are from people who liked the show.

I haven't watched a lot this season. I personally did not like season 3 when they had feel and the pastry school. I skip over those episodes

More than agree. It's as if every time they introduce a new character both the character and the show start to suck. First it was the "rich garbage bin guy" who was just awful, with even more awful parents. This was when I first began to fell the Casting Director was deliberately sabotaging the show. - Then all the "pastry school" episodes were disjointed and out of character. Then the "two stooges" go to Hollywood was beyond out of character. Like the OP said comedy (and actually drama, too) must be "exaggerated" to have story compression -BUT- there is exaggeration to make a point (hyperbole) and then there's pointless exaggeration.

This used to be one of my favorite shows. I rated it a solid "7." But with this "Riverboat" episode, which I gave a sad "4," I may stop watching altogether. The Randy and Max relationship was baseless. Now, throwing Ru Paul into the mix is just a disaster. WHY?

It's become a very bad admixture of The Three Stooges meet Dumb and Dumber meet Silent Bob.
It feels the writers have long run out of ideas, going from bad to worse. And the "characters" reflect it! Both Caroline and Max ran out of "charm" and "chemistry." They exist to simply bounce poorly written one-liners off one another.

They're winding down the show to end the series. Randy is a plot device for a conclusion, at least for Max.

That's part of the reason why the show feels different from the first 4 seasons, IMHO.

There was that one earlier episode where Caroline goes to see a psychic. The psychic tells Max she will end up with a husband and kids, and Caroline will end up with a successful business - she'll be so rich she wouldn't notice she's alone LOL!

I wonder if they would follow this episode prediction(?)

Wishing that heroes, they truly exist (since 2000)

I don't think Randy in particular is to blame for the change. I just think the writers have long since run out of ideas (and jokes).
