Theres a sequel out there. I know this post is a few months old... but just in case you were curious.
Spoiler
Akane was possessed by Sadako.
MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW
In the sequel we find out that Sadako had a child named nagi. Soon after akanes possession she gave birth to nagi. Akane (now possessed) was separated from nagi in an attempt to stop sadako from coming back. This info is given to us through Takanori's conversation with his sister Fûko as he shows her where akane has been "sleeping" for lack of a better word. Akane has been using her powers to hold and fight Sadako back. Takanori's sister Fûko takes up the role of guardian over nagi and is pretty much the lead character in the movie. Anywho at the end of the movie, Fûko reunites Akane and Nagi. Nagi REALLY wants to see her mother and it hits a chord with Fûko. Theres a whole back story for Fûko in this movie also. It explains her attachment to Nagi.
So anyways at the beginning of the movie we witness a woman stabbing herself in the eye, killing herself. At the end of the movie we find out the cop investigating this whole ordeal in the background of the plot was the womans husband. Upon the reunion of Akane/Sadako and Nagi, the cop shoots Akane through the chest killing her. Nagi never got the chance to say anything, but Akane/Sakado looked touched by it all and wanted to hold her daughters hand before her death. The cop is forced to blow his brains out, stuff hits the fan... basically everything goes to hell, but Fûko pulls Nagi back from it all and away from Sakado.
The last scene shows Fûko and Nagi having fun on a field playing and spending time together. Takanori I believe is still alive albeit messed up, the cop beat the crap out of him but we see him yell when akane is killed.
The ending just leaves it open like all these movies tend to do. ^_~*
Hope that helped!
