Easily the best superhero film

This goes beyond being just a superhero film. It's a conspiracy thriller (felt like 3 days of the Condor) filled with action that touches on poignant issues of our day (NSA, drones, freedom versus security), and one that actually develops the broader Avengers story line. It also has Abed.

reply

It's the best solo film. Right up there with Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man as the best of the best.

I still place Avengers as the genre king because, even with the narrower story line, it delivered and paid off all of phase one perfectly.

reply

I honestly found Avengers to be too disjointed. You're right that it was a good conclusion to phase 1, but it felt like it was jamming all the characters (and their own subplots) together by force.

reply

Winter solider had a great blend of action and intrigue for me,

i found that to be the case on first viewing, but less so now - perhaps i have just got used to it.

what i would say is that a better job could have been done of showing the group's transition from mistrust and rivalry to being a more cohesive group guardians of the galaxy does an excellent job in that regard.

for me, my favourite superhero film remains superman the movie, but this is probably second.

before we get started, does anyone want to get out?

reply

Not even close

reply

Alright then, what's your list?

reply

I wouldn't say the best, but it's definitely one of the best. To be honest it's my top superhero film at the moment and until I see AOU, it will remain my #1. It just did everything right; from the stunts to plot twists to character development. I watched it twice in cinemas, and then thrice just last week. I couldn't get enough of it. The fighting choreography was just top-notch. And since Captain America is my favorite avenger, I liked how it showed us how he was coping up with the modern world. And more of SHIELD's backstory. And Widow's character growth.

I said a long time ago that, in my opinion, Winter Soldier was the first comic book movie (that I've seen) to have Nolan Realism and Burton comic book fantasy.

reply

No this movie was dumb as sh*t.

Vulnerable glass domes underneath helicarriers.

Facial disguising technology that only gets used near the end.

No attempts to contact the Avengers!

Another King with no clothes movie going on. Brainless fools are too jumped on hype to see fail.

reply

I can do the same thing with whatever your favorite movie is. That will show you how horrible your argument is.

reply

The Godfather. I can't wait to see what *beep* are you going to come up with

The Godfather. I can't wait to see what *beep* are you going to come up with

ok i'll bite.

1. godfather is based on cultural stereotypes of italian people

2. no compelling female characters

3. marlon brando's performance is turgid and overrated

4. the musical score, while beautiful, is too imposing at times

5. it's racist as hell. there is a scene where a mob boss describes black people as animals who have no soul.

now, i may or may not agree with this list that i cobbled together in 30 seconds. the point, as jsstyger points out, is that whether you like a film or not is subjective. therefore anyone can take anyone's favourite films and come up with a list of reasons why it is rubbish.

before we get started, does anyone want to get out?

reply

Nope. You just can't come up with a random list. You have to back it up with solid arguments.

reply

MrsBucky, your Godfather list was nicely done. It was also amusing to read how you seemed to feel compelled to pick up the gauntlet that had been thrown down ("ok i'll bite").

Colonel Angus: Well thank you Miss Anabelle. And if I overstay my welcome, just tap me on the head.

There were reasons why the Avengers were not called in. First of all, they didn't know where Thor and Hulk went off too. It was also stated that SHIELD (under HYDRA control) was trying to capture Cap & Black Widow. Sitwell said that he wanted camera footage and so on to track the duo. That makes it harder to contact any help. The events of the movie take place over three days. So it would take time for the other Avengers to get there. Not every horrible thing like the climax of the movie needs the entire Avengers team. Pay attention, you idiot.

If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now.-Loki (Marvel's Avengers)

reply

@OP- it's up there! If it isn't the best it's damn close.

A true archer does not even need a bow or an arrow.

reply

True, but not every situation needs the entire Avengers team.

reply

lol... you do know that we would never ever make something like a helicarrier. not unless we could perfect some kind of "shield" technology. otherwise, it's just a gigantic, vulnerable target. the collateral damage if something like that were shot down would be considerable.

What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which Marvel movies are the most important events in people's lives.

reply

Can Ant-Man keep the ball rolling?

reply

Apparently YES, Ant-Man is keeping the ball rolling! Good for fans of cinema everywhere.

reply

It's the best sequel ever for the genre. Spider-Man 2 is still great but this film is simply a masterpiece.

reply

It's been on cable and I still haven't made it through the whole thing, though I've probably seen most of it in bits and pieces. It just feels like a long Agents of SHIELD episode.

I'd have to put it down as one of the worst superhero films I've ever seen. There are even cheesy older ones that are at least entertaining.

I can't think of a single compelling scene or character, the "we need to get the gizmo/drive to save the day" and "lets have a big battle on a hellecarrier" and "look at the anonymous generic soldiers shoot at our heroes" stuff is really tired. Plus, the contrived shaky-cam TV quality cinematography just doesn't do it for me. And the villains are so cheesy!

I usually love ScarJo, but I think she's wasted in the movie, and besides Captain America, there aren't any cool characters to give two craps about.

Bummer the directors of "You, Me and Dupree" have been given the reigns for THREE more Marvel films. I think I'll be passing on bothering with the Civil War and the next two Avengers films. I couldn't be less excited for them.

reply

Same here; just saw bits and pieces! It's hard for me to watch any movie these days. I have a very short attention span. The short ones related to "Saw" & "Cube" were the first ones I've watched from beginning to end in a while; but on You tube so I could walk away periodically. It was well done from my perspective because I could relate to it since it's so closely tied to the animated series I'm familiar with; except Fury being Black of course. lol! Others I know didn't care for his portrayal in this one; like it was a one day thing he was reading and left. I find Jackson funny; esp. when in Avengers when he said to the team how the Earth was "hilariously outgunned!" lol!
