What did you think of the villain Alexander Pierce?

I often hear that MCU villains are weak, with the exception of Loki, which is something I kind of agree on. However; I hardly hear people talk about Alexander Pierce: the main who secretly tried to get Nick Fury assassinated. What did you guys think of him?

IMO he's one of Marvel's best, not just because he was played by the great Robert Redford, but also because he had enough story and depth to make him interesting and not one-dimensional.

reply

Yeah, he's a good villain. Sometimes it's hard to flesh out a villain when you can only do so much in two hours, but Marvel did a good job.

They were right to cast Redford, because he brought real presence to a role that could have been underwhelming. Pierce has no superpowers or action sequences, if they had cast someone who didn't grab the attention of the viewer he could have gotten lost.

Like Francis, the villain in "Deadpool". I didn't know the actor, he had no presence, the first time I watched the film I assumed that guy was assistant to the real villain and kept waiting for the real bad guy to show up.

I really liked the Red Skull, it's too bad they killed him off in his first MCU appearance.

I know it's silly to respond to an old post but it's revealed in Infinity War that he ended up getting transported by the Space Stone to the Soul Stone but was made the guardian of it. He might as well have died though. He just sat there guarding it with the stones giving him the power to not need feed or drink. He guarded the stones for more than 70 years! That is messed up! I kind of hope they don't turn him into a villain after that. Going through that and just sitting there on that wasteland of a planet for more than 70 years guarding something he can't touch should reform him!

A great, compelling villain! One of the best in the MCU, ‘far as I’m concerned. I mean he may be a much older guy with zero superpowers in this universe, yet nevertheless he is a cold & calculating bad guy who’s very much a real threat. Not the flashiest or most physically imposing villain, however he made one of the more interesting, sinister and simply realistic villains not just in this franchise but in any comic film for my money. In short, he defines Hydra. And of course, he was effectively played by Robert Redford; I just LOVE that a legend like him took on this role in the MCU. So overall, great character & great execution.

On a side note... contrary to cool belief, I think the MCU has had a bunch of memorable & awesome villains. Pierce is a standout, though.

Haven't seen this yet but: Pierce was the villain??? In the comics he's one of Fury's truest allies. Go figure?

reply

I think they did it that way because Robert Redford looked like the original white Nick Fury and they thought it'd be cool to have a guy that looks like white Nick Fury be the bad guy. They even gave Redford the same hairstyle as the original Nick Fury.

reply

He's perfectly sufficient for the plot. The casting of Robert Redford is the best in-joke about the role.

reply

I LOVED Redford in this role.
So understated, and powerful, and evil, and a nice guy you want to be friends with - all at the same time.
If not a super-hero action film, I think it to be Oscar worthy.

reply

I think he was a horrible, weak villain. He had no superpowers. The real villain anyway here is The Winter Soldier. Now he was an awesome villain

reply

Winter Soldier was the more compelling to be sure, because he was both a terrifying antagonist, and an innocent victim, and the viewer's mixed feelings about him added an unusual dimension to the fight scenes. "Kill him! No, rescue him! Kill him! No, rescue him..."

Pierce wasn't a standard Marvel villain, he was more of an ugly-reality villain, and I'm quite sure that people like him are in high places in government! Which actually made him scarier than a clown with superpowers. We all know supervillains are defeated at the end of the film, while evil motherfuckers in high places stay forever.

reply

Pierce is the most underrated villain in the MCU. He rings very true to life-- sinister, manipulative, cold-blooded, but affable enough on the surface to disguise his evil. That's scarier than any supervillain.
