Ugh Sexist

Ok I don't really approve of the post above fat-shaming Poppy Montgomery, who is a size 6 max, but I will say that I don't appreciate this show being so anti-feminist. Carrie's constantly being sexually aggressive, being hit on, or wearing incredibly low tips for no discernible reason but tonight took the cake. She thanked construction workers for the catcalls and what is essentially street harassment. Hey male writers, actual women don't find that stuff flattering!! It's disrespectful and is a form of sexual harassment. Let's not normalize/encourage that kind of behavior, please!! More than anything it makes women feel very vulnerable and uncomfortable. Maybe in your mind sexually aggressive women = equality where can still treat women as objects but it's seriously not cool.

reply

That didn't sit well with me either. Bad, clueless writing.

reply

Really? You can't see how people attracted to the show in the first season because of Montgomery's physical appearance were not severely disappointed by her hugeness in the last season? Even when they, not the audience, refused to show her from the midrif down, her massive shoulders and gigantic breasts were so far beyond a size six as to be absurd. The overt sexist objectivism was a feint used to misdirect the viewer from the current corpus to the memory of past beauty.

reply

Uh, because basically saying that a woman with big shoulders and giantic breasts can't be beautiful, means you are in no position to speak on this topic, espcially when you begin by admitting you were only attracted to the show because of the appearance of the lead female, as if your shallowness is something to be proud of.

Also, I seriously doubt you could tell what size a woman wears by looking at her. Most men are horrible as guessing a woman's weight and size by looking at her. They also can't wrap their heads around the fact that it is possible for women to weigh more than 110 and not be fat, or that not all women wear their weight the same way. At 5'7" and 155 I wore a size 8, and a large shirt because I have broad shoulders and big boobs. Any man who ever tried to guess my weight put me at 120, 125, and got all wide eyed like their idea of 155 was some woman with rolls on a rascal and not one with a six pack.

Maybe it's time to grow up.

reply

Muscle is denser than fat.

I can easily see a woman of 5'7" weighing 155# if she has the right build and works out.

I don't remember if they gave her weight or height, but 5'7" 155# is similar to Meagan Martin, one of the women who has competed in the last two seasons of American Ninja Warrior. She was the first women to pass the Jumping Spider.

5' 7" and 155# is about the same as a number of the competitors in the last several seasons of ESPN's Crossfit.

Poppy was never one of those size 0 actresses, and I think that that is one of the things her fans like about her.

Plus her last child was born in November 2014. Not sure when the episode in question was shot, but if the last episode of season 3 was shown in September 2014, she was likely pregnant during the filming, as discussed elsewhere.

Are they seriously fat-shaming a pregnant woman? Jacka$$es.

reply

Is it anti-feminist to say that a woman covets attention, or at the least, are receptive to being given attention? Each female is different, and depending on the time of the day, the time of the month, the time of the year, modulated attention might be welcomed.

Obviously, men should not direct catcalls to all the women who walk past before them. The difficult part is determining which of those women are seeking attention.

reply

I agree it seems as if certain women want other women to behave as they would. All men do not shout Catcalls as all women do not hate Catcalls made at them. People are different, and some people can't help sticking there nose in other women's lives. If they do or don't like it, lets let them speak for themselves.

reply

I agree. That whole scene were cringeworthy and I don't get how it could gone past a review and even a first draft. Someone must have been in a real hurry to end this season!!

I couldn't help comparing this with what recently happened in Germany, and this whole scene generally illustrated what this group, and type(no, not all) of men think of single women and what they believe is socially acceptable - and I guess A&E TV and the writers of the show approves of this!!

Going beyond the valid point cosmic surveyor has made (the issue being individuality), you may have forgotten, that Carrie Wells is also promiscuous, and a high risk taker. She has some fellow in her life, whom she likes, but isn't a proponent or any form of a spokesperson for any other woman, something she always was right from her conception on paper.

What she did is morally questionable, actually her remark on taking action against such people would halt the construction business is even more sadly on point. I don't endorse or condone it, but I have to live with the fact, that people, including women don't give 2 flying ....s, because their focus is on their own lives. One could say, the situation is but the symptom on the perception of individuality in America. Rousseau's guideline was "my freedom ends, where yours begin" which is counteractive with the general perception of how the Bill of Rights shall be interpreted. Most people know by heart, that the first 10 amendments contain restrictions on the powers of the federal government, but it takes an attentive alumni to not forget it also contains restrictions for the citizen, and organizations. If anyone only tries strong policing, representatives would lose their sh*t, decrying federal overreach and needless additional rights for women, even though it wouldn't be more, than actually enforcing the constitution. On a general note, people doing menial work their whole lives won't become constitutional scholars or social activists achieving proactive things for the community. After the communists suppressed the uprising in Berlin in 1953, Bertolt Brecht wrote a sarcastic poem about maybe the people in power need to impeach society. These workers making catcalls well into adulthood aren't people in a very enabling culture, who will be deterred by potential sentences.

Most women not batting an eye over this are either self styled pillars of their community, or stay at home moms, who don't like the thought, that other women push for a system, where their position would be electable, it's way more complex, than those guys at the site, and just maybe the writers know this as well.

reply

Yes! I'm a single mom on sickness benefits so I definitely fall into that category. You could say I'm a feminist with restrictions, meaning, I thought that Carrie handled the situation with the construction workers beautifully! You never ever have to tone down your beauty for anyone, feminist or not! Someone appreciates your looks, soak it up! Suddenly you're 70 and everyone thinks you're a nuisance with wrinkles and false teeth. So some guy/girl hollers at you. Be flattered. I'm thinking, if it comes down to harassment, you will know. It's like going to a museum and suddenly you see this piece that just blows your mind. You know you can't touch it. It's probably out of your league. But you can shower it with words of appreciation! Just to know that that kind of beauty exists in our world is worth applauding. So yeah, amendments might be important when it comes to the judicial system and moral compasses, but please don't put shame on esthetics. You go Carrie, shake that money maker girl! ?

reply

Isn't Poppy currently pregnant? Wouldn't that be a good reason for her huge breasts and wide shoulders? Seriously, are these posters really fat-shaming a pregnant woman?!?! I am so sick of this obsession over female body types and sizes. How are little girls supposed to grow up with a healthy normal view of themselves? It's disgusting how society and social media make it okay to criticize females, especially when they usually don't even know the female they're slamming! Those in glass houses.......

I agree with the original post about the cat-calling and the irresponsible writers thinking thats okay, because it never is, certainly should never be encouraged and should never be considered acceptable behavior.

reply

Exactly. I guess I shouldn't have made a blanket statement about all women being uncomfortable with catcalls but many are and when shows make it look like women will thank you for unsolicited comments, especially by a crowd of men in an enclosed space. Anyway, I think most powerful women, which is what the shows wants us to believe about Carrie, don't relish in objectification. Women, especially Carrie, bring so much more to the table than their appearance and it's ridiculous that the show implies she's one way and the next second she's doing something totally out of character.

reply

I'd have to disagree with you or at least say you don't speak for all women. I don't find all catcalls offensive and generally take them as a compliment as long as they aren't lewd. Talking about what you'd like to stick where is not flattering, nor are comments about my body parts. And definitely no crotch grabbing or simulating sex. All of those are harrassment, disrespectful and would make me uncomfortable. But there was none of that in the ones made to Carrie. It was mainly some wolf whistles and a few woohoos.

reply

I agree. I've never found a 'Hello' or a 'Daaang' or a "Hey cutie" offensive. I'm a little shy so it was just likely that I would smile and blush and keep on walking. Now as you said something gross or vulgar like 'I'd like to do 'this' to you.' or something would make me angry and uncomfortable, but not just a whistle or what have you.

There definitely can be a point where it goes to far, but surely you have more to be upset over than a another person finding you attractive, even if you are completely uninterested/taken/have a different orientation.

reply

Wow, a strong woman who's comfortable with her sexuality and confident in her daily life? Blasphemy! How dare they depict women as anything but the fragile little victims that women clearly are! Obviously, she should cover up, a full body armour sounds good. She should be ashamed of her sexuality and just go hide in the nearest corner if a man is around. And when those construction workers catcalled her? Clearly, she should have run away in tears and refused to leave the house for a week.

Third wave feminism: Turning women into perpetual defenceless victims so the ideology can justify its existence.

If anything is sexist, it's YOU.
