And yet she only speaks and reads English

Wouldn't someone with perfect memory be able to remember writing systems and foreign languages? It always feels like she's showing off in minor leagues and wasting it on completely useless details. I like the twists in this show but I really dislike when someone who's supposed to be super is written by people who have no idea what to do with the superpowers.

I was thinking the exact same thing while watching a recent episode today! She made a comment how they need to get a translator to the crime scene and I was just thinking.. "GIRL..you can learn multiple languages in less time than it would take a regular person to learn one!"

reply

Reading maybe, but speaking a different language could be just as hard for her as anyone else. They base this off of the few people who actually have this ability so I'm not sure if this is really a stretch, or lack thereof.

When I took French in high school, I could read and write it pretty well, but I couldn't speak it well or understand spoken French well either because I have a very poor ear for languages. My accent was horrendous. That's why I appreciate people from other countries who speak flawless English and people from places like England and Australia who sound as if they were born & raised here. For example, British Tom Hiddleston is going to play Hank Williams! I give the man credit!

You do realize that Marilu Henner (who has "hyperthymesia" - Superior Autobiographical Memory) is an adviser to the series? You'd think that if they were doing anything incorrect regarding her memory that it would be brought up?

reply

Henner herself knows only English and Spanish. She also knows ASL which she says was very easy to learn. So I think those are very different skills.

Having the ability to do something and having the desire/ambition to do it are two different things.

Why would Carrie speak in other languages while all her friends speak only english?

reply

Language and memory are in two completely different areas of the brain. It's how amnesiacs are still able to talk and write while events completely escape them.

reply

As pointed out, language skills and memory skills are two different brain functions. Pure memorization gets you through maybe WhateverLanguage 101. Kinda like grade school spelling. Then you'd actually have to learn how to use those words, which is more complicated than simple memorization.

If you look at how Carrie's skills are demonstrated, she remembers details but she can't put meaning to those details without thinking about it. So where language is concerned, Carrie could probably memorize the simple translation of thousands of words (ie gato = cat) but that doesn't mean she'll know how to string them together, distinguish idiomatic/ironic/slang/dialect meaning from the basic meaning she memorized or understand context properly unless she learns AND practices it like anyone else.
