A&E has ruined one of our favorite shows......

....The vocab has hit the sewer. During the first three seasons, we loved the cast and we loved the story, but neither is worth the gungy and lazy vocab. Doesn't make much business sense to alienate a huge piece of the consumer pie. Tonight we were reminded why we almost never tune in to A&E anymore. Hopefully they'll evolve past the gunge and get back to being clever and smart. For now though, in some of the new and unintelligent words of the now less-attractive Carrie Wells, "Sh**, we're out .. We're screwed". We won't be tuning back in.

We won't be tuning back in.

Hopefully that's the royal 'we.' Otherwise, please do not speak for me.
I prefer when people talk like people talk - only wittier and with less 'urrs' and 'umms' )

Just following the flow of conversation. I personally don't get offended by language and what have you. So my problem with the words used now that they moved to A&E wasn't the issue. I just hate when shows not on network TV use gimmick words to appear edgier, etc. I think there seems to be a disconnect in dialogue when you look at shows that air on A&E, USA, FX, and AMC when compared with shows on HBO and Showtime.

HBO and Showtime clearly get away with much more coarse language, but they use it appropriately in my opinion. Especially when compared to say USA and A&E where you have shows like Suits and now Unforgettable that just toss "Sh*t" around because they can. Basically every time they use "Sh*t" on these most recent episodes it didn't seem natural. And by the third or fourth utterance I thought to myself "look at Unforgettable off of CBS and now they can say Sh*t"

First I should say that I probably shouldn't have even gotten in this conversation as I don't truly notice profanity anymore. It was such a large part of my work environment. But with the exception of a few words, profanity isn't allowed the power here in the UK that it wields in the US. I wasn't even aware of the addition of swears to the show until I saw it mentioned on threads here.

That said, I'm not so sure that it is a matter of trying to be edgier as I have seen written many times but rather writers finally allowed to write the dialog as they deem appropriate being no longer straitjacketed by the FCC's archaic system.

But it sounds like it drags you out of the story as much as having them say "shucks" or "darn" would me. Here's to hoping they find a happy medium.

I don't mean to be hurtful but if you are that freaked out by the occasional curse word I'm not exactly sure how you have gotten along this far in life. I really think you need to grow up a bit. Language is not morality.

reply

I don't know about the language. Really didn't notice it, but boy are they phoning in the scripts this season. Unless I was high when I watched the first 3 seasons, but the "I'm so hot" Carrie attitude and arrogance of the cast has made the show more of a cartoon version of itself.
