Is this just a rip off of The Hunger Games?

It seems like this movie and Maze Runner are just kind of rip offs really. I mean they are about teenagers, in the future, fighting against a dictatorship government, all with some sci-fi elements to them.

What do you think?

And a Lamborghini is a rip off the Ford Model T, TV is a ripoff of radio, and movies are a ripoff off plays, and you're a ripoff of your dad.
Everything has been done before.

Besides, it's more of a mix of Hunger Games and Harry Potter.

There are plenty of other stories out there about overthrowing dystopian governments. These three just happen to be aimed at a younger audience. The author of this has said she was more inspired by Harry Potter - and the movie (and The Hunger Games too) was put in production following Twilight. So their similarities are more of a coincidence, and they actually tried to differentiate the movie from The Hunger Games visually after the success of it.

Theres been movie with similar storyline since the early days of Hollywood, so why is it a bigger deal now?

reply

Since before even the early days of Hollywood, actually. History is full of "ripped off" stories. People have been building off of the ideas of those who came before them since time immemorial.

I mean, think of how many "Christ-like" heroes and heroines we've seen throughout the ages...That sole individual who is borne of humble origins, but is destined to be "the savior".

Common themes have been repeated over and over again in storytelling throughout history.

reply

Because the hunger games was the first movie to feature young people in a dystopia...

There's actually a good deal of Metropolis (1927) in this movie. Ultimately, though, it doesn't matter if Ithis story is totally original. Part of it is original, and part of it is not. All of these youth series like The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, The Maze Runner, etc are employing similar themes. In a sense, a new subgenre of film has formed. The interesting thing about these films is what they are saying about our feelings about society and our place in it.

There's no need to concern ourselves with how original this movie is. Just as a cover of a song can be enjoyed alongside the original, so can a type of film be enjoyed alongside another film of the same type.

Divergent is similar to Hunger Games in that their worlds are dictatorial and in the future, and that a teenage girl is the catalyst for bringing these worlds down. Other than that, it's not a ripoff. Still, I think Divergent would not have been made if Hunger Games had not paved the way.

Maybe you need to see Battle Royale,it may change your mind about The Hunger Games.
