That might have been a pre-established deal with Ami, and 2 seasons were all everyone signed up for.
What Ami and company learned from Miami Ink, if you have a shop full of friends, there's not much drama or interest so a lot of pressure comes down from the producers to make stupid stuff interesting. With NY ink, he started with a bunch of strangers with big personalities, and just let it all get filmed. No owner in their right mind would hire Jessica to run the counter, Robear to run the floor, Torres to tattoo, and apprentice a best friend all at the same time. It's just way too much attitude and drama to stay stable over a long period, so I'd bet he just said, 2 seasons is all you're gonna get from me.
If there wasn't a contract, why the hell was Torres in the second season?
