Interview: Actress Virginia Madsen on TMOBI, Kissing Morgan Freeman

Awesome interview with actress Virginia Madsen on how she wanted to kiss Morgan Freeman even though it wasn't in the script for The Magic of Belle Isle. She also talks about her role, Oscar desires, much more.

I thought the kiss was incongruous with the tone of the movie. Stuck out like a sore thumb.

And I really liked the kiss and thought it worked quite well. Hmmm, shall we settle this with pistols at dawn? Excellent, I'll be along around noon to see how it went.

I really liked this movie, but I was a little surprised by the kiss. Are we to believe that a romance will occur between the two? I got the impression there was supposed to be about 25 years difference between the two characters. Don't get me wrong--as a middle-aged guy I'm all for the old man getting the younger woman.

I loved rhis heartfelt movie except the romance inuendos about Freeman and Madsen. I could see the connection of the grandfather role of a man who never had a family of his own. I thought the idea of people who need people idea but the whole idea of something romantc between Madsen and an old man gave me the 'dirty old man" vibes that turned me off totally. That kind of ruin it for me but the acting was wonderful.

It's really interesting that people keep creeped out about the age difference when in "real" life it's somewhat of a norm for both men and women to have relationships with people both younger and older than them. I didn't really see why the fuss is about them unless people are still uncomfortable about the whole Black/White thing. If a 50 y/yo man dates a 30 y/o woman people rarely bat an eye. When a 50ish woman dates a 20 y/o they seem to say, "You go girl".. Yet when a 75 y/o(Black man no less)has feelings for a 50ish woman he's automatically a "dirty old man"...I didn't see a real spark of chemistry between the two-more of a mutual admiration for who they really are, and what they are capable of..

~25 year age differences between couples in movies and in real life happens.

Example; Michael Douglas is 68 and his wife is 43 = 25 years difference.
- In the film "A Perfect Murder" (1998) the Michael Douglas character is married to a woman played by Gwyneth Paltrow. At the time of the making of this film Douglas was about 54. Paltrow was about 26. Age difference = 28 years.

Second example, Harrison Ford. He is 70 and his wife is 48 which = a 22 year difference.
- In "Sabrina" Julia Ormond played Ford's love interest. She is also 22 years younger than him.

Third example, Denzel Washington. In the movie "Flight" Denzel's character has sex with one of his plane's stewardesses played by Nadine Velazquez. Denzel is 58. Velazquez is 34. That = a 24 year age difference.

* Again, it happens and because of this I had no problem with the Morgan Freeman/Virginia Madsen relationship in "The Magic of Belle Isle".

BB ;-)

it's just in my opinion - imo -

What do you mean dirty old man vibe are you twelve. They liked each other. Who cares about there age. A connection is a connection no matter what there ages are. He was the best for her kids. I don't know if it was just his legs or he being paralyzed. But if he can get it on I would think there is no one better for her than him. He is smart and is gifted as a conversationalist great father figure and I see them being happy.

The age thing reminded me of Murphy's Romance with Sally Field and James Garner; and I liked that movie too.

The kiss was perfect in every way.

Good timing, good type of kiss, no interaction afterwords.

Nicely done.

reply

The kiss was just an acknowledgement of the strong feelings they had for one another, no further romance required between them other than her beautiful piano playing for him and his grandfatherly wisdom imparted to her kids for her. To think of the kiss as leading to a sexual relationship IS sick and not intended whatsoever.

Why is that?

reply

Well, realistically, since his spine was severed (he tells us this) he cannot perform sexually.
