Twin ?

Sorry, did I miss part of story..was Tom a twin?

reply

Sorry, no. Now if that had been the case, revealed near the end, the whole separated at birth angle, well, however farfetched, it might have made it a little more believable for me. Alas.

Ah.. I agree which this one of your posts as well. It would have also made for a totally different kind of film though. The focus of this film was primarily on the Benning character and how does the loss of a loved one affect the mental and emotional state of a relatively normal well adjusted human being. I found myself feeling sorry and embarassed for her character while watching the film and when they went to Mexico the plot turn to a little creepy and scary. I mean, seriously, what kind of person takes a current lover to the exact same location where a previous lover died?

I think it reasonable to question your premise of Nikki (Benning) being "a relatively normal, well-adjusted human being". Had she been such a person, I think she'd have handled several things rather differently from the get go. For one, she'd have told Tom straight away that he looked exactly like her deceased (and not dumper) husband and of her confusion on how to cope with that. She'd not have hidden the photos of Garret. She'd have told her daughter about Tom, and instead of Mexico, she'd have suggested some other vacation possibilities. Indeed, had she been emotionally healthy, that whole "run away from daughter Summer" trip south wouldn't even have come up. IMHO.

I thought the film was going to be predictable enough to reveal that they were twins separated at birth raised by different adoptive parents, and that the discovery might be made if Tom's heart defect was disclosed and Garrett's autopsy report revealed that he drowned because he was having a heart attack - and that this would all somehow come to light via Tom's ex-wife.

Maybe that's how it would have been handled in the original (if this were a remake of some Douglas Sirk film with Jane Wyman in the Annette Benning role).

Funny. The entire time, I kept being reminded of Leave Her to Heaven, starring Gene Tierney. It's not a Sirk film, but it reminded me very much of one and of this film. Basically, it's about this woman who goes after and marries this man who bears a striking resemblance to her recently deceased father, to whom she was very attached. (It's implied that she suffers from Electra complex.)

BTW: Tom was no relation to Garrett. He was just his doppelgänger. They say every one has a double in the world. I believe this, because in my area I've often been mistaken for this one person. I've yet to meet him or run into him.
