What i heard about this movie is that second half looses its grip and Ranbir's character fails to connect with the audiences...Rediff.com said that it's almost a DEVDAS type movie in second half...i got some of the public reactions and they said that its a typical Bollywood movie...1st half comedy and 2nd half lots of mellow drama...i have not watched it yet but i was pretty sure that it'll be like that coz its Imtiaz...

I KNOW ONLY TWO LANGUAGES:
1ST-ENGLISH
2ND-BAD ENGLISH :D

reply

Yes, it depends on which genre you like..Rockstar has nothing to do with music icon..its basically a love story..first half will be appreciated by one and all, second half depends on one's taste..I love Imtiaz ali movies but this time Imtiaz has dared to present something unusual unlike his previous flicks..even ranbir kapoor's acting is worth the price of a ticket :)

reply

It is a good film, not amazingly great. Ranbir does his best acting of all his movies that I've seen, and I hope he continues to improve. (Got to say he looks pretty hot in some of the scenes, and I never found him appealing before!) It is more a "typical" Bollywood outing than I had hoped, but I can't say that Rockstar was disappointing. AR Rahman's songs were also better than what I've heard in his recent soundtracks. Go see it, and enjoy it for the visuals, the love story, the music and whatever else you personally enjoy most.

reply

Exactly!

reply

can you tell me if it has the usual and ridiculous crowd dance we see in all Bollywwod movies?

reply

Lawl! I got your point. No its not the typical Bollywood love story.

reply

finally someone replied. tks!

reply

it is one of the best bollywood movies...must watch!

reply

Actually , The issue is that there r two india ,Some have all resoucess at their disposal & one don't know where their next meal gonna come from...Now , how does it conneect to Why Rockstar is getting mixed reviews ?.. I

reply

I think its a good mainstream Indian movie with a different touch! I like Imtiaz Ali movies, the first half is good with witty and humorous dialogues but the second half should have more focused about the pain and i don't even see a drug reference which i think should have been there given how the story progresses in the second half...the conclusion lacked something, cant put my finger upon it but it does!
Overall i would say that Ranbir acting alone makes the movie worth watching....and Nargis's acting was good for debut but i did saw some overacting.

reply

till sadda haq movie was a winner...direction acting et al...but post tht nargis takes charge and frankly too much fr her on debut...ranbir does his best but somehwere there t movie fails to become a rock on and loses all momentum of 1st half....though clearly watchable hummable and ranbir is t real rockstar f t movie

Think the totem is still spinning..

I can't understand the criticism. It's a brilliant movie on so many levels.

I'm from the UK and get taken along to see Bollywood movies by my girlfriend (probably seen 50/60 by now, so hardly an expert). I thought this was pretty poor.

The relationship between the two leads makes no sense - the way Ranbir Kapoor stalks the girl and she then suddenly decides they should be friends is silly. His ascent to stardom is hardly dealt with, which is bizarre given how long the film is (he's struggling, then he's a star). The second half of the movie just collapses totally, with montage after montage, and the story of her being ill is just thrown in at the end for a bit of drama. Nargis Fakhri's acting is laughable - one of the weakest lead performances I have ever seen. The worst criticism I can level at this is that it's a nearly-three-hour film about two characters and at the end of it I didn't care about either of them.

The only real positives are Kapoor's performance and the soundtrack, which is decent. There are also a few nice shots and moments hidden in there.

That said, I don't think I'll ever 'get' Bollywood movies. I always have the same problems with them: too long, silly comedy, over-the-top melodrama, same old boy/girl story, no ambiguity - everything is spelled out for the viewer, poor acting (usually by ex-models or sons/daughters of stars).

Actually, that is my biggest gripe, the level of nepotism is astounding. A country of a billion people must contain incredibly talented people but its film industry is ran by a few families.

Anyway, I'll keep being taken along to see Indian films and I'll keep struggling to see the appeal :-). (To be fair, I really liked Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and thought Dhobi Ghat was interesting, if something of an Iñárritu rip off.)

Bollywood movies are made for exuberant people who don't clinically dissect a movie but go with it, its inconsistencies, get swept up in the melo-dram, the emotional aspects. you need to have a certain sense of humor, tolerance to truly enjoy them. It mirrors actually the great Indian soul. Bite it. If you don't like it, don't watch. send your girlfriend with somebody like-minded. nothing worse than feeling apologetic for liking something your sacred other doesn't. :-) I run into this roadblock all the time. I am non-Indian. hardly can I ever get any of my friends to come along. And it's better because I HATE when they start dissecting afterwards what didn't make sense... so what? Btw. I loved Zindagi best too... Shor in the City is another good one this year. you might like that one.

Let me tell you one thing..You cant judge Bollywood by the so called superstars presenting remakes of regional cinema (Bodyguard, Singham, Ready all are remakes from south Indian Industry)....It would be unfair if you judge Hollywood movies from american pie series..if you go deep down the roots of Bollywood, there are movies capable to beat Hollywood (except science fictions and horror genre)..

Have a look at my recommendation :

Best Thriller This Year : Shaitan, Dum Maro Dum (you read it right)

Best Thriller Cult : Yeh Saali Zindagi, Shor In The City

Best Social : No One Killed Jessica, That Girl In Yellow Boots

Best Love story : Rockstar, Tanu Weds Manu, Mujhse Frrenship Karoge (fresh)

Best Musical Drama : Soundtrack (serious recommendation),Rockstar

Best Comedy : Delhi Belly (serious recommendation),Pyaar Ka Punchnama,Phas Gaye Re Obama, if you had to pick out.

Best Action : Force (No Non-sense scenes), Aazaan(If you can tolerate Hero), Don 2
Best Children Drama: Stanley Ka Dabba (Serious Recommendation), Chiller Party

Best Drama: The Dirty Picture

Best Road Movie: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dhobi Ghat

Movies likely to receive tons of awards: Ready, Ra.One, Bodyguard,Singham, ZNMD

Thanks for the recommendations, I really appreciate it.

You're right. In the UK it's only the big, star-name movies that get released at the cinema. As you say, not fair to judge the industry on them.

I'll check out some from your list and see what I think! (Of those I've seen, I liked Delhi Belly, hated Ready!)

Cheers.

How can you list movies like Dum Maro Dum, Tanu weds manu, Force, etc among the best in the year??? yuck!!

reply

Well, I feel Dum Maro Dum was executed quite well, same goes with Force. Yes, regarding Tanu weds Manu, its not the best bet of year..

Anyway,it was my personal list of recommendation, obviously no two person can have the whole set of common likings, but I am sure, for most of the list, you will agree with me. My granny used to say, "accept the similarities, respect the differences" lol.

reply

I totally agree with this amazing list of reccomendations, I have seen nearly all of them and they all delivered and more. Awesome movies. Thank you for the list and I hope everyone watches them. As for Rockstar, loving this movie won't so it justice, I see that it is phenomenal

Okay. Actually, I am a new member of IMDB community, So I thought there only exists Title Specific Message Board, where you can post messages regarding particular title only..

I may sound amateur but can you educate me about Indian Cinema Board, I don't know about the same (that's why did not reply to your previous message).

And do tell me if I have violated board rules...

reply

Thank you, himanshu-desai. I will try and find some of these movies.

I have only seen 4 Bollywood films so far when you claimed to have seen 50 - 60. But it seems you see only the surface of the story line without giving much thoughts but then complaint that there are no ambiguity...

>>>The way Ranbir Kapoor stalks the girl and she then suddenly decides they should be friends is silly.<<<

Heer made the decision to a definite breakup because... she WAS married, she felt guilty, or/and she already knew she had terminal illness... her decision was NOT by choice because the next montage showed how hurt and sad she was after the breakup with a straight cold face. It was plain to see even though Nargis Fakhri is not an excellent actress { it's only her debut work }; however, she played this scene very well!

>>>he's struggling, then he's a star <<<

Yes he was struggling because he was inexperienced and believed in his own way of style, but he became an overnight sensation AFTER his first CD came out on market.... what so hard to understand? This happened and will keep on happening to many many music artists, but it seems you have never heard of any musicians became a big star with their first CD. Need some examples?

I'm no expert myself.... I've only seen 4 Bollywood films>>> 1} 3 Idiots { which I LOVE }, 2} My Name Is Khan, 3} Like Stars On Earth 4} RockStar

Sorry it got misplaced!!
