Could have been a fantastic piece if......

This movie could have been fantastic if it wasn't so unnecessarily long which happened in the second half of the movie. They should have shortened the 2nd half for their North American release, or unless they think a shorter version will dissatisfy Indian speaking N. American movie goers!

** Please keep in mind that I'm non-Indian speaking, so my opinion is purely
from an "outsider"! So, please do not be offended:} **

Since I'm an outsider, I knew nothing about the leads, I thought Ranbir Kapoor [ Jordan }was a first and foremost a real rock star/musician turned actor, because he was sooooo convincing. Especially I only realized after seeing the movie that he didn't do the actually singing, I was in awe because he made me think that he sang, he wrote the songs and he played the guitar. This man truely has acting ability. He's not particularily good looking but he has an aura, plus enormous charms!
And I realized that this was Nargis Fakhri { Heer } first screen debut. She wasn't excellent in it but, yes, she was very pretty and she pulled it off easily as a student/dancer. But in some scenes that required higher level acting skill; she couldn't deliver.... She has star appeals; she will do very very well in future I think.
This movie has excellent directing, excellent cinematagraphy, excellent editing, great casting and one can tell there were a lot of heart and soul pouring into the process in completing the movie. I recommend this to my friends after I saw it!

Nargis Fakhri was terrible. She couldn't convince of her character in a single scene.

This film would have been epic if Imitiaz would have chosen someone else. And worked on script more. Ranbir kapoor gave his best performance so far.

I agree with most of your points. I think 'Rockstar' fell just short of being a true classic. I mean it had so much going for it- AR Rahman's sensational music, Anil Mehta's gorgeous visuals and a superb Ranbir Kapoor in the act of his lifetime. The first hour or so really thrilled me with how arty, mesmerizing and romantic it actually was.

But then things began to spin out of control. After that stunning Sadda Haq song, the film begins to meander, wondering where next to go. Heer is reintroduced into the film and this is where Imtiaz Ali's direction falters; too happy with coincidences, he stretches the third act uselessly into a contrived climax in which Jordan rediscovers hope and loses it again. No doubt it is a shattering climax that put me to tears but it could have well have been chopped off.

And then there was Nargis Fakhri simply unconvincing as Heer. The film deserved a better actress- almost anyone could have done the job better than Fakhri but I guess Ali wanted a girl to have that truly stunning look. Fakhri does look great but she simply cannot act at all. As long the film is in Ranbir's grip, as long as it is squarely about him, it rocks. As soon as it begins to focus on Heer and her ailment, the film becomes terribly forced.

It was a really good film with a superb concept- that pain leads to artistic genius and I think that Jordan was an unpredictable character. But 'Rockstar' fell just short of being a modern classic mostly because of that totally unnecessary third act...

Couldn't have put it any better zzzoeb. You must be a professional critic.

The only point I diverge from is Fakhri's acting. I thought she was good in some scenes and gave unconvincing performances in others. A case of acting inconsistency in my opinion. The same could also perhaps be said about Ali's directing.
