weird how so many people don't get this movie

People are saying ruby was imaginary the whole time.. what? how did you get that out of it. You can't take all the mystery and magic out of this story or it doesn't make sense. This movie is fiction, anything is possible. Just because it was a metephor doesn't mean it wasn't meant to be real.

I can see the inspiration behind the story. There are people in this world that have at one point in their lives been in the position where they feel in control of another person. The ability to push somebodies buttons, even make them love you, for your own selfish reasons. But a one sided relationship is the worst kind.

I think everybody in a long term relationship has at one point thought "I WISH YOU WOULD JUST...". This movie explored how destructive for everybody involved it would be if we had true power to change somebody, and the futility of trying to make somebody "perfect", because there is no such thing.

I totally agree with the last few lines of this
you might wish for things to happen in a certain way but if it did really happen like that you might not enjoy it
sometimes you just complain for no reason, you wouldn't welcome the change if it happens.

It is never about what happened, it is only how you look at it!

The movie only presented how bad things would get if stupid people suddenly had control over another person and they never learned from their mistakes. Calvin, frankly, was an idiot that just typed the first thing that came into his head without considering the different possibilities. No wonder Ruby said that she felt like she was being torn back and forth all the time.

A much smarter person could easily write and refine a personality for Ruby.

And, no, I'm not going to describe how I'd create my perfect mate because I don't actually have the power.

As a much simpler example, consider how most people would react if they found a magic jinni and got three wishes. 99% would just start wishing away without even thinking about their choices.

i'm sure every dictator thinks the same way. i'm smart enough i'll get it right because i'm smarter than average.

True. But, it's more than just dictators and writers with magic powers. Everyone in the world thinks that they are smarter than everyone else. And that goes for pretty much all occupations.

Well, except the guy you have pictured in your avatar. He mostly sat in his chair and thoght, "How did I get here?"

Yes, most people focus on the movie itself and not the metaphor behind it.

The writer feels he's not in control of his life and he doesn't want to deal with his problems. The solution comes by creating someone who is 100% under his control. This is the fantasy part and it doesn't need to be imaginary in the movie. It is simply fantasy.

In the moment he fails to feel in control anymore, he abuses his power and loses anyway. He understands that in a relationship, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

This movie is similar in nature to "If I Stay".

We've all been there, trying to force someone to love us even if that person wouldn't love us normally. So as long as you identify with the character (and you need to be a hypocrite to say that you haven't been there at least once) it is an amazing movie.

There are many subtle cues in the movie, like "I want them to love me for who I am" and "Isn't he a control freak?".

The lesson of this movie is that you can keep someone else around and be happy with it only through what you are. You can force, coerce someone to do otherwise but you wouldn't be happy.

The ending wasn't that good though. It felt very "Groundhog Day".

Another point in the movie though was the fact that he could control himself too. I mean it was his story and her story.

The chair part was the fact that he refused to deal with his own issues and challenges. But it was easier to make her mold to his desires than for him to get past his own emotional obstacles.

I like this movie.

I'm not really into romantic movies but I've seen a few. There are only two movies that left a similar impression with a strong message.

If I Stay ... The power to do it all again and do it right and Tres Metro El Cielo ... To appreciate what you have. All three leave a bitter taste (apart from the ending here, it should have ended exactly after the book launch) and all three contain powerful lessons.

I totally agree. But I see the same thing come up in discussions of any movie which depends on suspending disbelief to fully appreciate it. One of my favorites is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which requires that suspension of disbelief. A great many of the best movies do. In many cases that's exactly why they are great. But some people want to make everything real. Maybe to them that's the greatest pleasure, but I agree that it loses the mystery and magic.
