I know of two people with amazing voices who tried out for "American Idol," and neither were picked. Now I understand they can only take so many talented people; however one of my friends observed that some of the people that got to go on through to the final round who were not good only did so that producers could have them on television for ratings meaning that they "beat out" people who actually had enough talent to get to the final round. In addition I know of a well accomplished dancer who tried out for "So You Think You Can Dance" who did not make it because "she didn't look the right age," and it was either her or someone else who did not make it on to one of these shows, because "they didn't have a good enough backstory."
I know I am dragging on, but I feel like this show is the same way at times. I mean I do not watch it regularly, but I do know that two former child actors have been on there, one of them winning, the daughter of one celebrity was a contestant and the relative of another was most recently. Now while I feel like these people do have the talent to compete and win I feel like they were only chosen based on their background and/or connections. It's not fair to those people who do have the talent to be on this show and are passed over because of these things which have nothing to do with talent. This was a long post I know. I just wanted to hear other's opinions and see what you all thought.

I think that the producers do have a hand in who is picked. I also think that although the show is called the voice, the contestants also have to be someone that people will vote for. Hence why we have to sit through everyone's sob stories over and over again. I wasn't sure I was going to watch this season, and am just finished the second episode because I'm just tired of the same thing every season.

That is true. In addition to talent they do try to pick people who will look good on television and that will appeal to the audience. I haven't watched it in ages, but I will say that the people on there that I have seen are talented..even the ones who I suspect were picked because of something other than their talent. I think what led me to post something about this a few weeks ago was the fact that David Cassidy's nephew showed up on their right after the news broke to the media about his dementia. I thought the timing was just a little too coincidental. A few years ago on "America's Got Talent" they had a singer on there with a really sad sob story, and of course all of the judges turned around for him, because they were going to look like a**holes if they didn't. Well the very next day the news broke that he faked the whole thing, and of course he was voted off shortly after that. I mean if I were related to an A list celebrity and auditioned for one of these shows name dropping who that was and that they wanted to sit in the audience if I was picked you bet I would be selected whether I was good or not. In television ratings > talent.

Looks like they always pick someone who has more of the "look" than the "voice" as in the more saleable face.
So many times a freaking amazing vocalist is not even in the finals :(
