I guess I'm in the minority - I didn't mind the son

He came off as rather cold in the beginning, but to be honest I sympathized with him more than Matthew. I agree about not blaming your parents for all your problems, but it was clear that Matthew was still a jerk to him. Matthew even admitted to Pauline that he'd been a bad father. He cared more about a girl he knew for a couple of months (I think? Not sure about the time frame) than his own son. "I don't care if you're my son, I'll kill you if you hurt her." Seriously?

I didn't see any point in Pauline and Miles getting together romantically. And Pauline was way too meddlesome.

I didnt mind Miles at all either. I completely understood where he was coming from especially since his pregnant wife was leaving him for someone else. I also wasnt surprised that he started dating Pauline who reminded him of his mother and who made him feel how his mother made him feel like his father Matthew. Personally I thought Miles was just jealous and unsure abkut Pauline. I also think he, Matthew and Paulines charaters were interesting and understandable if you understood their perspective. The relationship between Miles and Matthew was as well and to some realistic. For me, the only child of his that I minded was Karen. She was a bit self absorbed. She just flew in, shopped for her family and left to attend a recital.

I liked the son and even the daughter. I think they showed their father great love by traveling to Paris to see to him, after he and their mother evidently abandoned them at some point. Their behavior was understandable to me, but I got the impression we were supposed to see them as spoiled Americans or something, especially the daughter. Perhaps she was damaged from her parents' neglect.
