Maybe I'm in the minority but I didn't like it....

There were so many things I just didn't like about this film.
I found the relationship between Matthew and Pauline creepy.. I spent half the moving feeling awkward, like she was looking for a father figure & he was just waiting for permission to kiss her.
The romantic lunches, with champagne and the like.. All I could see was a dirty old man!
Yes, I know he was still grieving the loss of his wife, but it was just like the creeps that order a mail order bride when their life partner dies. Yuck.
Michael Caines accent was distracting too.
The adult children, please, let's blame all of our issues on our upbringing, even though we're 30.. Been done to death.. Boring
5/10 (and that's only because France was such a beautiful backdrop)

Unfortunately Bunbun's position reflects too much about our society. We have a tendency to think everything is about Sex. That is why this movie does not make it in the mainstream. None of the relationships are about Sex.
If you don't assume it is about sex, then there is no "Creepy old man" aspect at all. It is quite common for older people to be caught up in the joy of youth and beauty and the energy it brings -- and nothing else.

It is also common for people to take on an aspect of "protector" without laying a "claim" to someone -- as I feel Mathew was to Pauline. Was he jealous, a bit, but you can be jealous of someones time, not just sexually.

I will agree that I got a little disappointed at the overused "my father never loved me enough" aspect, but it actually does play out well.

He didn't do or say anything creepy or inappropriate either. He did stare at her a lot, but I felt like a part of him was missing his youth and she was his "cloud".

reply

I loathed it.

I can't see what Pauline was attracted to in him, shaggy beard, unkempt hair.

and

Pauline's dance studio must be one of the most dangerous I've ever seen, anyone could just topple over the railings in their exuberance.

I kind of like the movie except for the end but I wish there would have been some sort of tying up that they were just friends and Caine really didn't want to be an old creep. The movie seemed to want to leave this up to the viewer.

Wow, society is scary. Nothing wrong with the relationship between Matthew and Pauline. They were just friends, regardless the gender and age. They understood each other and enjoyed each other's company.

MC's accent? I'm 15 minutes into the movie and I think it's called English.

I agree with you. I think the storyline wasn't that bad, but the way everything was filmed made it awkward. Just lacking some sparkle, too cold.
