Sweeter Ending

it would have been nice to see pauline stay with matt as a companion (not caregiver) until his NATURAL dying day. they seemed to have a love and closeness that surpassed sexual intimacy. it was sad he chose to end his own life and die alone. pauline and especially the son should have had a clue his father would end his life, after he discovered their relationship. and i was shocked by their sudden hook up in the first place. i didn't see a strong connection between the two. their relationship wasn't developed enough, and gave pauline the slight appearance of being that not-so-nice woman matt's daughter called her earlier in the film.

Totally agree with the ending you recommend. Far superior option.

I did not like the quick hookup between Pauline and the son either. It seemed bogus.

I just saw the film and loved it but I agree with you about the ending. The son was such a jerk, I was shocked Pauline ended up with him. Kind of a let down ending.

the ending truly ruined it, I don't know who's idea it was but wow, really stupid

"the day I tried to live, I learned that I was alive"

The film was based on a novel, that's where the ending came from.

Even though the ending came from the novel, it could have been more carefully constructed in the movie. OR -- the ending could have been changed. Shock -- they do it all the time.

This movie, and the novel before it, seem to have been based on glorifying euthanasia. That is the great lie that comes from the story. The shockingly quick romance between Pauline and Miles is a mild bit of disappointment compared with that. That being said, however, there was absolutely no basis for their relationship. It belied everything that had preceded it. A beautiful friendship between Matthew and Pauline would have been so inspiring and would have left the audience with something to treasure. As it is, this is just another kick in the gut for everyone.

If we want 'downers', we can always watch 'Breaking Bad'..

There's no way the girl is a gold-digger... & save the tragic endings for Shakespeare... in Hollywood, they changed the ending for Redford's 'The Natural' - so, some producer ought to do it again. I hate mean-spirited scripts.
