Is it just me...spoilers!!

Or did it almost seem like the writers were going to make Wes Bentley's character the killer, and then changed their minds? Between the creepy way he stared at her when they first meet, the fact that his character had just transferred there and was on sick leave for awhile (making us think it was because he was stabbed with the bone in the hole), and the fact that he oddly disappeared during the climax of the movie because "his mother is sick so he is taking her soup." I mean, it seemed like all the signs pointed to him, and then it turns out to be just some random guy. I kept waiting for a twist, and it never came. I am not saying I disliked the movie, it just feels like they had one story line going and then got scared or something. Or maybe I am just over-analyzing. Anyone else think this or am I alone in these thoughts?

Definitely a good red herring on their part.

Still...

They kinda left his motivations just hanging there.

Did he really want to help Jill?

Was he infatuated with Jill?

Did he just want to bang her?

"I think it's time to see Amanda sticking guns in people's faces."

Agreed. I wish they had explored that more, even if that is not really the point of the movie. All I know is Wes Bentley plays creepsters really well!

Personally, I think he just wanted to help Jill to make himself look good. After making the comment to the Lt about liking them a little crazy and the angered response, I think he wanted to show the Lt that he was a good cop even though he was a newbie and even though he made a tacky statement. I also think he might have believed some of her story but most of all, I think he wanted to show up the dept, that he was smarter than them in the event there really was a kidnapper, that it was his work and her trusting him that helped solve the case.

"There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy...her heart."

But the problem is in the film, neither his belief in Amanda's story or "her trusting him" "helped solve the case". I think it is fairly obvious that "Ricky Fitts" had been brought in from American Beauty to serve as a red herring. But I agree with the posters that said his character should be developed more. Ultimately, his beliefs and motives remained uncertain and in fact the film seemed to have forgotten him.

If he turned out to be the villain, that would be a little too predictable (in movie terms, not in real life). But if he was meant to be the "sympathetic" cop, he was not sympathetic enough. He was of no help to Amanda other than providing some tiny bit of information at the very beginning. He never had to bend any rules (as most sympathetic cop in movies would do). He gave Amanda a number that she did not use when she was in trouble. Amanda did almost all the investigations on her own in Nancy Drew style. And he was absent on the crucial night, delivering soup to his sick mother! Regardless whether he turned out to be the villain or good cop, his character was too thinly written for the outcome to be convincing. If he was meant to be a red herring, there should be at least a few scenes that raise our suspicions other than his seeming interest in Amanda.

Wes Bently was good and provided the ambiguity needed to keep the thriller taut. It was good misdirection. I expected him to be the killer.

reply

I think because Wes is always such a bad guy in films and creepy it our minds go there...

reply

Everything has been done. They were going to make him the killer. Or make us think he's the killer but then he ends up saving her and they fall in love. So in the end he was nothing.

This movie could have been really good, but the writing was, to say the least, crappy!

the twist was, there was no twist!

Lol. It was like they just gave up on the writing because of time or money constraints. I'd really like to see Amanda S. in a good movie for a change cause she is pretty talented.

I agree completely! I mostly enjoyed the movie b/c I told myself from the get go that it was just a movie for entertainment. Plenty of plot holes, etc, but overall, a fun show.
EXCEPT that Wes Bentley's character/Hood was forgotten about. Sure he was a good red herring, but I kept expecting the guy from the Star Cafe/Coffee shop to be the red herring.
When she was talking to him on her cell in the way out to the campsite/hole, he said that cell phones got no reception out there. I kept thinking, "he's in the car with you!!!" maybe he got in when she first got out at the ranger's station. Det. Hood went missing just as long as Jill did during the climax & then, was there when she got home. Weird! I thought Digger could've been the dad from the dad/daughter story. Maybe Hood had his daughter & was making him try to lure Jill into a false sense of security by thinking she killed the killer. Then, he could've been waiting for her when she threw the gun out of her window. I don't know exactly what it was, but I just wanted more. There were so many good/entertaining directions they could've taken.
Just a little let down. I'm making up my own ending that she only thought she got the real guy. Hood was smarter & set it up to make Digger look guilty... LoL

I wonder if there were scenes cut out? I mean where was he when he gave that lame excuse about the soup? it was never explained

reply

I knew he wasnt the killer by the way the writers tried so hard to make us think he was.. if that makes sense

It does.

I agree. There are many things that they could have done with this movie. This is one of them, by making him the killer or at least one of the cops.

I just caught this movie and I was thinking the same thing pretty much...I mean it's like they just dropped his character altogether after he went missing himself haha

It does seem like they wanted to go somewhere with it, but maybe got some push back from somewhere, maybe the studio...who knows. If there is an original script floating around somewhere maybe it would tell us. The movie definitely could have benefitted from developing him more. Or if they didn't want to do that just not include him at all!

I thought he was going to be her knight in shining armor in a way. It was too easy of a conclusion to make him the actual bad guy so I thought she would get in a pickle looking for the guy and he would come in in the nick of time and help her...but nope, nothing. It seems like a missed and mishandled opportunity and was kind of glaring in the middle of it all.

Ending would’ve been ALOT better if it was him. At least then it would’ve made some f’n sense. Predictable yes but sensible. Instead we got that pile of trash ending with some random schmo killer with no stated motive. Dumb.
