It seems some people don't seem to understand.... ***SPOILER*****

....that the water symbolizes the medium between life (birth) and death. The water that constantly shows up throughout the movie symbolized the "in between" these two worlds. That is why we see the water in the beginning of the movie and when Emanuel swims with Chloe and then Chloe swims to her mother and they are happy together and at peace.
